2001 Hyundai Tiburon... oh... my god... haha. Help.

I really need help on two things that are happening at the same time
which are getting more frustrating by the minute.

First:
The car keeps shutting off while driving all of a sudden it’ll just ..
be gone. When I attempt to restart it .. it’ll turn over, I think, but
start to shake and then within 30 seconds it will shut off again.
After a few attempts at restarting it will finally turn over and
drive.. for weeks without another incident. During this.. the check
engine light comes on and stays on but when the car starts to drive
again, it turns off.

Second:
The fuel. When I add gas to the car.. it acts like it is full and the
gas will even swell back up and spit out. But its empty or almost
there according to the gage. If I go really slow and wait after the
gas pump clicks off.. then I can add gas for another few seconds. But
it takes 20+ minutes to fill my car.. and winter is back ::sigh:: and
when it is cold and snowing.. its soooo horrible to be standing out
there filling my car for what seems like eternity.

Any ideas?

First; it smells like a fuel problem??? Sorry couldn't resist!!!
I would say that your fuel tank venting system is the cultprit system here.
Your car shutting off all of a sudden woult be because of the vaccum (low
pressure) in the gas tank and the fuel pump loosing suction.
The fuelling problem, again, since the fuel tank cannot vent properly, it
uses the filling tube to vent and thus the back flow out of the filling
neck.
Hope this helps you out.

Since your check engine lamp is coming on, I'll add that you should scan
the engine computer for trouble codes. I wouldn't be surprised to see a
crank sensor code. (If that's the case, replace the crank sensor to
correct the stalling.)

On the other hand, the trouble code may point to nothing more than the
venting issue, and that won't likely cause a stalling problem.
