It's in the fuel tank with the fuel pump!

I believe it is under the back seat sitting on top of the fuel tank.
A real PIA to get to so it might be worth taking it in to a dealer.
I know... a trip to the dealer for a silly filter. :(

Presuming that the 2002 is similar to my 01, it's in the fuel tank. To get
to it you have to remove the rear seat bottom.
HMA webtech isn't too specific I found. At least for me it sounded like it
would be simple once I pulled the filter out of the tank, but it turns out
that the filter/pump/float* unit has to be somewhat disassembled and
reassembled. I was able to do it without specific instructions, just take
it apart, replace the filter, and put it back together again the way it
looked before. But this does involve a couple of springs, and few O rings,
and I"m sure a couple parts I've forgotten about already.

Hints? Have a towel ready. Even if you depressurize the fuel line (by
disconnecting the pump and running the car) a little fuel will spray out.
Have some old towels handy.
Be gentle as you pull the unit out of the tank. I wasn't thinking about
it, and I banged the float arm against the lip of the tank pretty hard.
You have to angle it to get it out.

I'm sure I"m forgetting things, I wish I had taken more step-by-step
pictures when I did it. Hope this helped though.

Ben

*There are 2 pictures posted in alt.binaries which show the access into the
tank and the filter/pump/float unit, under the title 2001 Elantra Fuel
Filter.
