2002 SantaFe is hard starting only when motor is fully warmed up

It will start up great when its first started, but , lately...its hard
starting when its got a warm engine. The red battery indicator light
comes on on the instrument panel but the battery is brand new and was
doing it before i replaced the battery. Most of the time, the check
engine indicator light will also come on as im cranking. Once it
starts, its rough for about 3 seconds then smooths out. No
driveability problems though. Any thoughts on this ? It has 48,000
miles on it . Thanks, David.

Hi,
If your battery light is staying on, the primary problem is that your
charging system is not working properly and not charging the battery fully.
That needs to be checked at a dealer, shop, or even a parts place. The
reason it would start slower when hot is that the starter is attached
directly to the engine so it gets hot also. With increases in heat the
resistance of the starter motor's windings goes up. This restricts the flow
of current, hence slows the starter motor down and gives it less power to
start your engine. With your lower battery voltage, this makes the matter
even worse.

doesnt crank any slower...turns at the same speed . The red battery
light goes out after it starts.

Perhaps the fuel pressure regulator is bleeding off fuel pressure.

Probably best to take it in and have it checked.
