2002 Sonata- brake question
 

Well, I put the Sonata on the road a few weeks ago, and it's a
very nice car in many ways. However, I took it to be inspected
last week, and was told it needs the check engine light problem
resolved and it needs pads and rotors on all four wheels.

Now, the previous owner told me it needed brake work when I
bought it, and test-driving it indicated that the brakes should
probably be looked at-shimmy while driving, pulsing pedal when
braking.

The inspection place, which I've dealt with for years and have a
certain amount of trust in, quoted me $500 to replace the pads
and rotors. At this point, I am planning on doing the work myself
and replacing the calipers as well.

The HMA site doesn't really detail the rotor removal. The front
rotor has two Phillips head screws in it. Do these attach the
rotor two the hub? I found instructions on the web that basically
say "bang it off with a hammer", which indeed is what usually
happens, but I'd like to be sure before I start wailing away.

My other question is about ABS. I don't find anything to
indicate the car has ABS on the window sticker. Several parts
sites divide the cars into rear drum/no ABS and rear disk/ABS. I
couldn't tell from driving it whether the car has ABS. When I was
looking at the right front rotor tonight, I did notice that there
is a wire/sensor/crenelated assembly on the steering knuckle.

The manual indicates there is an ABS light on the dashboard.
This light does not illuminate when I turn the key on. I am
wondering if the ABS module failed and somebody disconnected it,
and what the consequences of that might be- I'm quite happy to
drive without ABS, but I don't want a $600 surprise come
inspection time.

You're pretty much on top of the rotor removal. Just make sure you remove
the two #3 Phillips screws prior to wailing.

You probably don't have ABS. V6 models use the right front wheel speed to
provide vehicle speed to the ECM and TCM. To verify, peek behind the
engine above the alternator (again presuming V6). If there isn't an ABS
module blocking access to the alternator from above, you don't have ABS.
