2002 Sonata, brake rotors and pads?

I have a 2002 Sonata in need of new brake rotors and pads but I can't seem
to find any auto parts dealers in my area who have them in stock. A friend
told me that the 2002 Sonata uses the same rotors as the 2001. Is there any
truth in that?

You shouldn't need rotors on a two year old car. Who's telling you that
they need to be replaced and why?

According to the parts catalog, 01 and 02 use the same rotors.

My breaks started squealing horribly so I had my friend, who's a mechanic
take a look at them. He offered to do the job for free if I get him the
parts.

You probably just need pads. Did he measure the thickness of the rotors? If
not then he can't really make the determination that the rotors need
replacing.

The squealing is likely coming from the metal clip-like wear indicators on
the pads. When the pads wear down sufficiently, the ends of these clips
contact the rotor and squeal so as to alert you that the friction lining is
worn out.

Exactly. Squealing doesn't indicate a rotor problem.
