2002 Sonata Transmission problems
 

I have a 2002 Sonata LX and have had transmission issues since day one.
Erratic shifting from 2nd to 3rd mostly, but some times from 1st to 2nd.
I've taken it to the deal repeatedly, but they can never duplicate the
issue.
The TCM was updated because of shifting problems reported in a tech
bulletin, but this didn't resolve the issue.
I now have 70,000 miles on the car and the transmission doesn't move in
reverse or drive after the car sits overnight.
The dealer was supposed to keep the car for a week, but instead called the
first day and said that they wanted to change the fluid and if I had any
problems after that I could bring it back in. Needles to say it's worse now
then it
was before and when the car does move the flair from 2nd to 3rd is very
noticeable.
It goes back to them on Monday, but I'm very skeptical as to them addressing
the problem.

Any advice?

Wouldn't move at all in reverse and a fluid change was to address this
issue? I hope the fluid was very low. Otherwise, this isn't likely to
address the issue at all. Unless you have a fluid leak, it sounds like
your tranny's toasted.

They called and said the fuild was low Monday and that they were going to
keep it over night and call me today...They never called. I've been jerked
around on this for 2 years now. I'm just affraid that I will be stuck
without any kind of recorse.

If there's a failed component that's no longer warranted, then there may be
a great deal of difficulty. Even in cases where it appears to me to be
concrete that a past problem in the warranty period was not fixed, it's
sometimes impossible to get Hyundai to step up. At least there's an issue
with the fluid level. That increases the chances there's nothing wrong
internally with the trans.

Of course, I assume the dealer visually checked for leaks.

Have they checked the raditor coolant? I've seen radiators leaking at the
coolant line at the bottom of the radiator. I've even seen them swap
coolant and tranny fluid.

They admitted that the fluid level wasn't low enough to cause the issue.
They've had it all week and could find nothing. I talked to service manager
and he had told me they drove it twice today and still no issue. I told him
that the only difference between last week and this week was the fact that
it was allot colder, down in the low 30's and this week it's been in the
60's. I suggested that might indicate a pump or a seal issue with the fluid
being thicker and he agreed. It's supposed to be cold here again next week
so they are going to keep it. He told me that as soon as they can duplicate
the problem they'll replace the tranny. What are your thoughts?

Update: It dropped to the low 30's here yesterday. Needless to say the new
tranny will be installed by early next week!
