2002 XG350 oil filter.

Can anyone tell me why hyundai oil filters have changed physical size
since 2002. I was first one to change my oil filter. when I took the oem
one off, the filter that came with the vehicle was at least 2" longer than
the aftermarket one they sold me at the dealership. also, AC, fram, all I
have looked at are the new shorter size.

Thanks
Gary

I know of no change, but new parts hit some dealers and some areas of the
country sooner than others. Did your dealership indeed sell you an
"aftermarket" oil filter? If so, were you expecting a Hyundai filter?
And if so, why did they sell you an aftermarket??

Re: 2002 XG350 oil filter.

This was a poor choice of words on my part. It was a Hyundai part no.
Ironically, it was the same part no. as the earlier and larger older one.
Takes just a little over a half pint less oil now to fill it than it did
before due to the smaller filter's physical size.

Thanks for answering my post
Gary

No change in OE engine oil filter size. What's the color of the filter
you got at the dealer?

OK, let me get this straight. You got the part number off the old
filter, you compared it to the one on the shorter filter
and they are the same?

The last oil filter part # I know of is 26300-35501.

yep.

Re: 2002 XG350 oil filter.

That is the one they sold me. that is also the number on the box of the
first one i put on from the dealer a year and 4 months ago when I changed
oil the first time after I got it.

I have since went back to the dealer, and the parts guy told me the filters
have been shorter for almost a year.

He told me that they often do this for no apparent reason. It is no
problem. I just couldn't figure out why the change.

Thanks

Gary

I'll have to look under the vehicle. I already put it on. I'll get back
with you.

Thanks

If you look at aftermarket filters, it's entirely likely that you can
find one that's the same base and thread size, but longer. A likely
combination is the PL14459 (short) and PL14619 (longer). Both are the
same thread size. I'll hit my local Pep Boys and compare the overall
dimensions.

I checked and while these two filters have the same thread size, the
gasket diameter isn't the same. I emailed Purolator regarding a larger
compatible filter for Hyundai cars and will post their reply here.

I've got some basic information from Purolator. The following filters
are the same thread size as the L14459 that's spec'd for Hyundai:

L10109, L10193, L10343, L14460, L14610, L14612, L14619, L20073, L20253,
L20287, L20290, L24458, L30165, L30251

I haven't had the chance to check which ones have the same gasket size,
but I'll try to find out this week.

Re: 2002 XG350 oil filter.

Thanks Brian, looking forward to the information.

Sorry I misspelled your name wrong in my reply to you.

You know that the larger the filter, the more capacity it has to have. I
just cannot figure why they downsized it. Maybe for more room in the
shipping carton and less weight, from Korea. lol

Re: 2002 XG350 oil filter.

Found it! After comparing the filters on the list that Purolator sent me
to the standard L14459, I found an exact replacement that's ~30%
longer. It's number L24458. I picked up a Pure One filter of that type
and will use it on my next oil change.
