2005 SanteFe
 

05 SanteFe - ticking sound in engine on startup.
has 5w20 Synthetic engine oil in it,
always has. Sounds like a lifter, and goes away when its warmed up.
More noticable after sitting for > 8 hours.

Client is using gasohol; switching to unleaded,
as I thought it might be an injector.

I listened with a scope, and its coming from center of engine - around
valvecover and intake area.

Anyone know of problems or suggestions?

Your situation seems to be the same, especially 'cause you described
exactly the same symptoms as my car has and also exact position of PCV
valve (at least on my car, but probably is the same on yours).

And yet, nobody seems to believe it.

I seen your thread, but didnt understand-
the new PCV also makes the noise?
Doesnt make the nosie without the PCV Valve? new or old?

Is there a plastic - or non rattling valve available?

Are these valves defective then?

I can take the valve out and test, but still looking for a solution.

Before jumping on the removing/replacing parts wagon, listen to try to
pinpoint the noise first. Take a long screwdriver (or similar metallic
object) and place on different areas of the engine. Place your ear on the
end of the screwdriver. The noise will be loudest when you're closest to
the source. I.e., a PCV valve should be loudest when touching the valve
itself, and lifter noise should be loudest when touching the cylinder head
in the vicinity of the lifter that's making the noise.

Also, to test the PCV valve, you can use needlenose pliers to pinch off
the hose coming from the PCV valve. Without suction at the valve, it
cannot make noise.

The other thing I'll suggest is that 5w-30 oil is probably better for this
engine. Consult your owner's manual to be sure.

I tested it like this - I first let the car sit overnight to cool
down, then I removed PCV valve and started the car - and noise was
gone. But be aware, I realised later from some other posts on Elantra
forum that it is possible to damage plastic valve cover if you are not
careful about removing PCV valve. Perhaps as HT suggested, you can
just pinch the rubber hose and see if noise is gone. Also one
important clue - in my case, noise is loudest when I release the gas
pedal - that's because PCV valve is in the different position with
high vacuum in the intake manifold.
As far as I know, there is no service bulletin about this, and no
other type of PCV available.
I have this issue almost from new, it is 5 years now, and it seems to
be cosmetic problem only.

I'm hearing the same noise on my 2005 Santa Fe with the 3.5L engine. Doesn't
seem to have affected anything but it is a bit bothersome.

I pinched the hose slightly, and the noise disappeared.
