2008 Santa Fe FWD 6C Mileage Issue
 

I have a 2008 Santa Fe with FWD, 6 Cylinders, Auto...and get 12 MPG in
the city and 18 on the highway.

The sticker said 18 city and 24 highway...the service manager told me
that car is still "breaking in" at 3000 miles and that mileage should
improve over time.

I think he is full of ....as most Stealers are.

Any thoughts/comments?

My Sonata picked up about 1.5 mpg after a break in period. The 12 mpg city
may be good, may be bad. Depends on traffic in what city. When creeping
along in heavy traffic the best of cars may be 2 or 3 mpg. As for the
highway, I'd guess you should get a little more but I don't know how fast
you drive

FWIW - I purchased TWO '07 SF LTD/AWD and have been averaging a combined
21.5+. If I do more highway driving (several hours) I can achieve 24+ at
speeds of 75. I don't know what your type of city driving entails but 18
would disappoint me as well.

Not knowing your exact driving conditions and habits, but those numbers
sound a little low. I've got basically the same care (2008, FWD, 6 cylinder
2.7l) that we purchased the end of August. It has just over 1,100 miles on
it, probably about 2/3 highway, 1/3 city. It started out around 17MPG but
the last couple of weeks has been hitting around 21 consistently.

My previous vehicle was 2003 AWD 6C 2.7 Santa Fe, and I averaged about
20MPG with the same driving mix.

My wife has a 2004 3.5L Santa Fe and 12 MPG seems a little low.

Can you describe exactly what your city driving is like? Mileage is based
on time and distance traveled. If you're driving in NYC or LA then 12 mpg
might be good. If you live in Wyoming or Montana I can see where your
vehicle moves all the time so mileage would be much greater.

I purchased two '07 Santa Fe's with 3.3l but most of my driving is highway.
As a result I average 22 combined. Perhaps we can try to analyze your
driving habits to help somewhat?

Since I live in NYC, my city driving is sloooow.

But I do take frequent trips of 50-100 miles each way, fill the tank,
check the tire pressure and drive at 70-75 and get 16 mph on those
trips.
It reall galls me that Hyundai had TV commercials saying 24mpg!!! I
would accept 18-20 as reasonable.
Don't get me wrong, I love this vehicle...its the mileage that galls me.

I was not "trolling". There are thousands of complaits about dealers
out there as opposed to the very few who praise them.

I posted exactly what the dealer told me, and I am in my rights to
think his answer was bullshit.

At the time of my post, there were no others dealing with the issue of
poor mileage in 6cyl FWD 08 Santa Fe's, so I asked.

For comparison - I drive highway most of the time with little city stop and
go. The trip computer displas 22.? - 23.high MOST of the time. If I
calculate gallonage and distance to derive fuel mileage it comes out almost
exactly the same.

Now, my daughter lives in Brooklyn NY. When I drive to visit her, about 120
miles each way, my trip computer will average 18 mpg. That's averaging so
in traffic, the BQE, Flatbush Ave, I must be getting <12.

So, as you can see, driving type makes a significant difference.
Unfortunately that's true with virtually every car. I also have an '02 PT
Cruiser 4-Cyl, 5 Sp and I can't even get as good mileage with it than I can
with the Santa Fe.
