97 Accent Captive rotor removal

Hi,

I need to remove/install a new set of captive rotors on my 97 Hyundai
Accent. My Hayes manual does not go into detail on how to do this.

Are the bearings pressed into the rotor or onto the spindle shaft? If
someone could explain the disassembly of these rotors I would appreciate
it.

An online version of the Hyundai shop manual for this vehicle may be
accessed online at www.dcsonline.hyundaidealer.com. Click on
"Technical Info" to open "Webtech"; then enter model and year and
click on "Shop". Lots of exploded diagrams, schematics, part numbers,
specifications, service rules, torque values, special/common tool
requirements, maintenance schedules and practical advice.
Let us know how you make out. Your experience may be valuable to
others.
Good Luck.

Re: 97 Accent Captive rotor removal

After reviewing webtech I have a few more questions.

It seems that webtech does not have a "rotor removal" section, instead
it's apart of the wheel bearing removal process. Instead of having to
remove the hub and knuckle from the strut is it possible to remove just
the hub then remove the rotor and press out the bearing with a new one and
a new seal and reinstall? It seems that that's more work than is needed to
do the rotors on this car. Any takers?

You'll need to pull the wheel hub. A ten pound slide hammer with a wheel
hub adaptor usually works well. You should only have to unbolt the axle
from the hub to be able to do this (after removing the wheel). Once the
hub is off the knuckle, you can unbolt the rotor and take it off the back.
If you're careful not to get dirt in the bearing, you should be able to
put everything back together without replacing the bearing. The bearing
is pressed on the hub, not the rotor.

Will I need a new seal for the bearing or is it behind the bearing in the
hub?

You shouldn't. Typically, the outer bearing and seal come off with the
hub, and as long as you don't monkey with them, they can be reinstalled by
bolting the hub on.
