99 Sonata Keyless Entry Question

Hello,

My Wife and I just bought a 99 Sonata GLS from a dealer and the car has
everything on it except keyless entry. I asked the dealer and he said it
wasn't available. After reviewing the manual, I noticed that it says
somthing about keyless entry, and we even had a single page flyer stating
that the vehicle did indead have keyless. (I read the TSB and do realize
that it is a Clifford supplied system for my year). My wife contacted the
previous owners that traded in the car and they stated that they turned in
2 key fobs and that they NEVER had a problem with the keyless entry
system.

I contacted the dealer to question why we hadn't been supplied the key
fobs for the keyless entry and the dealer said that the keyless entry
system was probably removed because it was aftermarket. (Yes aftermarket
but it still says Hyundai on them and were approved and sold on Sonatas
for this model year....you didn't remove the tires because they didn't say
Hyundai on them did you???) The dealer told me he would look into this and
get back to me to see if the system was removed or not. He did tell me
that He didn't want sell me a problem system... I think I am getting the
run around....

Anyway- Where is the module so I can check to see if it was in fact
removed, and if it wasn't where is the valet switch usually mounted? Can
I program a new remote if I purchase one if I find all the components?

Re: 99 Sonata Keyless Entry Question

Get under the dash on the driver side and look up and see if there's a
black box about 4" by 5" with "Hyundai" or "Sonata" written on it wire
tied in place. If so, the keyless module is still there.

Re: 99 Sonata Keyless Entry Question

Thanks Hyundaitech...My keyless entry module is still attatched (it was
tucked and wiretied behind the fuses). Now the question is, if the dealer
doesn't have the original remotes and I have to get new ones...how do I
program them? I checked the TSB and it said something about a valet
switch. I traced the wires but couldn't find one, is there suppose to be
one mounted and if so where would it be. Is there a way to program a new
remote in without a valet switch (may be by jumpering the 2 pins/wires
together to simulate the valet switch "flips"?) Thanks

Re: 99 Sonata Keyless Entry Question

oops just answered my own question:

I guess what they mean is the white and black wires that are taped up
close to the relay that allow the keyless system to unlock / lock the
doors?

... I probably don't have a valet switch...from the TSB:

Programming a new remote:
Plug a programming valet switch (p/n 00243-16130) into the white and black
wires. If you don't have a valet switch, just tap the black and white wires
together to count as a "flick".

Turn on the ignition and flick the programming switch on/off 13 times.

Press button 1 on the remote.

Turn off the ignition. Press button 1. If the doors lock/unlock continue
to step 5. If not, repeat steps 2-4.

Turn on the ignition and flick the programming switch on/off 14 times.

Press button 2 on the remote.

Turn off the ignition. Press button 1. The driver's door should unlock (if
it locked, press button 1 again to unlock). Then press button 2. All other
doors should unlock. If not, repeat steps 5-7.

Remove the programming switch and leave the white and black wires
disconnected .

Re: 99 Sonata Keyless Entry Question

Yeah. You've pretty much got the idea. You can even wire in a generic
toggle switch if you think it'll make your work easier.

Check through the tsb's for a part number table. If I have time to check,
I'll report back. I know at least one tsb gives part numbers.
