Brake Pad Shims?

I replaced the front brake pads on my 2000 Accent but I did not put the shims
that were on the orig. pads on the new pads as i did not like the way they seem
to fit, they felt like they could come loose and ruin the rotors. The brakes feel
great,no problems at all, I used premium pads by Wagner which cost me $40.00
whis is a little high but I have always had good luck with Wagner.Does anyone
know if leaving the shims off will cause me any problems ? if so please let me
know.Thanks in advance.

brake shims are only used to stop squealing.
if there's no noise you're laughing, if they start squealing and
annoying you, it shouldn't take too long to put them in again.
what sort of distance did the old pads do?

Re: Brake Pad Shims?

It would seem that the shims help the pads slide back and fourth, without
them you might have the pads stick and wear out faster or unevenly. good
luck!

Re: Brake Pad Shims?

The old pads did 52,000 but I have a standard shift trans so I am sure that
helped a little.

yeah, still 2 countries left in the world, on the old system.

i've got 53,000km on my 2001 accent.
i measured a pad a week ago and still had 10.7mm of meat left on it.
i guess my driving is on the gentle side too.
