A/C BELT NOISE - HELP!!!!!

I know this group is not for Kia but was the closest I could find. Any help
would be appreciated!

We have a 2002 Kia Spectra. For some time now we have had issues with the
A/C. Here is the situation....

Once the car has sit over night (only happens when it's hotter, during the
summer) you go out, start the car. Wait a minute or two and start the A/C.
You will hear the compressor kick on, then the belts slip and you hear a
loud noise. The noise is not the typical squeal you would hear from belts
but more like a grinding noise. It only last a second or so but can be very
loud and will often shake the car. This has already bent one pulley which
was replaced by the dealer but this did not resolve the problem. I have
had the car into the dealer 4 times for this issue but they can never fix
it. They have replaced the pulley mentioned before, other times they
simply tightened the belts which also did not resolve the problem. It has
been frustrating because we know there is something wrong but can't seem to
get anything fixed. It only seems to occur during the summer months when
it's hot, during the winter when you use the defrost the compressor still
kicks on but acts normally.

Please help!

Thanks,

Tony

Re: A/C BELT NOISE - HELP!!!!!

I've heard something similar to what you describe. I think it's oil
settling in the compressor and you hear the compressor knock when it
starts and tries to compress the oil. I've not seen it be an issue.

Well this has been going on for awhile now and I've even had to replace one
of the pulley's because it was bent due to this
rough start in the morning. I know another guy who has a KIA Spectra, same
year as ours and he has never had this happen before. Would replacing the
compressor resolve this???

Re: A/C BELT NOISE - HELP!!!!!

Hi..

I had this same thing happen with a GM car I owned a couple of years ago
and it was the compressor. The service guy knew right away what it. It
caused quite a racket and the car shuddered when it started.
I would think that if it's compressor oil, then it is overfilled and the
service dept. should pick-up on that as well.
Good luck with your A/C, keep us posted.
