Car stored for 5 years

I inherited a 2001 Hyundai that has been sitting in an upstate New York
driveway since February 2002. The car has 3/4 of a tank of gas. Nothing
was done to it before it was stored i.e. gas stablizers, etc. What needs
to be done before the car is started & put into use?

Drain the gas and get rid of it. If you try to run the car with it you are
just asking for a lot of headaches. also change the fuel filter while you
are at it. Once you get it running change the oil as soon as possible.
Good Luck

Re: Car stored for 5 years

I agree with Peter, the gas must go. Really I think your best move is to
have it towed to a reputable nearby service station & yes drain the gas,
change the filter & do the oil too. It will also need a new battery, the
wheels should be pulled to see if the brakes might work -they could easily
be seized. The wheels should be spun by hand & the vehicle lubed.
I would be tempted to spray some WD40 in through the spark plug holes to
give the cylinders a bit of lube . Also I'd be temped to try turning the
motor over slowly by hand after spraying in the oil just to make sure it
will turn. If there's rust on the cylinder walls & you crank it hard by
battery, rather than working it back & forth with the plugs out by hand, you
stand a bigger chance of damaging the rings.
Also check the air filter etc. I once bought a car parked for about a year
& a half & did most of the above but not the air filter. Turned out a mouse
nest had been built in the air intake & the poor car couldn't get enough air
to run much over an idle. Good luck
