Comments PLEASE - Sante Fe 4cyl gas milage +

Hi,

I own a 2003 Santa Fe 4cyl 5spd (30,000km). I find the mileage really bad
especially in the cold weather we are getting now. I am getting less that
300km per tank! In the summer, it's a s-t-r-e-t-c-h to get 450 kms. I can't
believe this is normal. Would any other Sanata Fe owners please comment.
Last winter wasn't as bad but I can't say for sure what the milage was like
but it seems a lot worse now. I also had a stretch around the beginning of
winter where they couldn't get the engine light to stay off (parts replaced
under warranty).

Does any one think an emissions test of some kind might reveal anything?

Also the clutch blew up on it a while ago and they fixed it but since then I
have had some trouble shifting, especially down shifting (into first the
worst - will sometime grind badly). They say I shouldn't be down shifting
but I always have. Comments on downshifting?

Just a comment on both these issues, I have owned cars w/manual trannies
many times, often racking up almost 350,000 km with no issues what so ever,
so I think my driving habits are pretty good. The only difference now is
it's mostly city driving, not commuting any more.

My 2002 auto trans gets 20 city 28 hwy if I fill up with Shell
gasoline. Put BP in it & I get 13 city & 18 hwy.

Why I asked Hyundai how they get the City/Hwy mileage from a new car.
Their answer: 91 octane on their track for 3 hours nonstop run.

There's a variety of theories on whether you should downshift, but that's a
matter of preference. Regardless, it shouldn't grind when you shift. The
grinding sounds to me like it's probably a transmission issue.

That seems low my 2004 4 cyl 5 speed on the hyway will go 800 km before
the gas light comes on at about 110 km per hour.I always down shift to
lower gears i just dont do it to slow the car no grinding of any kind.I
think they changed the clutch in late 2004 because their were problems.

I have a 2002 Santa Fe, 6 cyl, AWD.
I have kept detailed records over the past 3 years (61,000Kms.)of my milage,
which is a combination of highway and city driving in Nova Scotia Canada.
I have gotten on average 7.28 Kms/Liter or 24.23 Miles /Gallon over the past
3 years.

The past 2 weeks have been very cold, I have driven 250 Kms., all City. I
averaged 4.38 K/L or 13.6 MPG

The best milage I have gotten from a tank of gas was 7.9 K/L or 29.7 MPG,
which has occurred a few times on a long highway trip.
