Cracked exhaust manifold - Elantra
Anyone have a problem with a cracked exhaust manifold. 1997 Elantra - the
dealer says it's very common for the exhaust manifold to crack due to heating and cooling. Wants $500 to change it. Anyone ever change one- looks pretty simple at first glance. Got a good source for parts? |

Yeah it is easy. You can usually go to a junk yard and get one for less
than $100. Go to http://www.hmaservice.com/webtech/default.asp and read up on your car. Select your year, model and engine and then click SHOP. Select your year, model and engine and then click SHOP. It CAN be easy, since it's a mechanically simple procedure, but on an older car, removing the nuts/bolts that secure the manifold to the cylinder head and exhaust downpipe can be a bear. If you can find a used manifold at a junkyard, it might be worth it to have a local repair shop install it, or at least have one available as a backup. They'll have the equipment to deal with stripped nuts or studs, should that be a problem. For the $500 the dealer wants, you could put a header on it and have some fun! ;-) |

No one I know off-hand has had this problem either. |
