Cyclone/Turbo fans?
 

I'm sure we've all seen those fans on TV that you hook up to the
intake hose or wherever it is and they supposedly produce up to 35
more HP and better gas mileage. There are like $60. Has anyone
purchased one here and if so did it really make a difference in the
performance? I have a 2003 Tiburon GT V6 which is pretty quick as it
is but wouldn't mind getting a few more Horse out of it and the $2,700
Alpine Supercharger kit seems a bit steep.

Who's "we"? Usenet is a global medium; these commercials may not be

For physical hardware, you typically get what you pay for. $60 seems
like far too little for a real forced-induction kit. I certainly
haven't seen the commercial you mention (who needs TV when you have the
Internet?) but I doubt that something so cheap will really deliver
enough extra air to the engine to make a difference. ICBW though.

The first thing to do when going for extra HP is always to open up the
intake and open up the exhaust. You can get decent parts for a CAI for
about $180 or so, installation on a V6 Tib looks like it wouldn't take
much more than an hour. Replacing every piece of the exhaust system
that's behind the catalytic converter is more expensive and requires
more labor, so I haven't researched that extensively. If you do those
things, you will see definite HP gains. Have you done these things
already?

The Alpine supercharger for the V6 Tib is only $2700 now? Dang. It
used to be ~$4000. I still can't afford one, but it's nice to know that
it's cheaper now.

There's a site devoted to Tiburons; http://newtiburon.com/ . It's a
"web forum", so its interface sucks compared to Usenet's and its
inhabitants seem to be 50% AOLers and subliterate 13-year-olds, but you
might find some useful information there. If you're stuck without a
real Net drop, you may want to turn images off for browsing that site;
there are too many images for dialup users. HTH anyway,

If it ever was good for some cars it was before fuel injection. It was
supposed to help mix the fuel/air better for better burning, etc.

okay man ... imma break this down in a few sections

first off summit has real ones selling for like 300 bucks ... so i doubt
you will get anythign more than an 80mm home pc fan for 60 bucks

second it wont even matter unless you have a map sensor .. im not
famialier the tib i have an accent myself and it dont have a map
(manifold air pressure) sensor just a maf (mass air flow) sensor

next up if you have a map sensor then you should really look up its
specs cuz a 1 bar map sensor is only good for a few psi of boost. and a
2 or 3 bar map sensor may not be usable by your computer

now onto some meat ... my buddy didnt go the proper route but hooked up
a 150mph leaf blower to his dodge avenger ... that was a good 25%
increase in performance ...so about 35 hp ( we didnt have anything to
measure its "boost" level )

lastly if you go though route .. you will need both increased engine
cooling capacity and most likely an intercooler cuz things got really
hot really fast

and as dances with crows mentioned ... exhaust work will come in really
handy there cuz it will have a lot more air to get rid off ... oh yea
if they got a supercharger kit then look into what comes with the kit ie
map sensor and remapped ecu or if it works with your stock map(if appl.)
and or ecu

It sounds too good to be true, doesn't it? You know what they say about
that...

It's junk, just like most low cost performance add-ons.
