drive axles

I just had brand new drive axles installed in my XG350L and it is now
clunk clunk clunking around left turns and making a severe clunk when
I back up with the wheel turned left.

Would a brand new axle have a bad CV joint?

It's possible that the joint was damaged during installation. It is
also possible that something else was not tightened properly.

I would take it back to the shop and have them look it over. It is
very likely that more damage will occur if you continue to drive it.
