Well, the engines are completely different. The Sonata has an extra
0.4L on the Elantra. The Sonata I4 has considerably more torque,
especially at lower RPMs but the Sonata weighs more than 500 lbs more
than the Elantra. The Sirius II engine (the 2.4L used in the Sonata)
is also much louder than the Elantra 2.0L Beta II. The Elantra GT
will also offer more comfort and toy options than a base model Sonata.

My recommendation would be as follows: If you can't afford the V6
Sonata, stick to the Elantra.

Well, maybe I mean faster or zippier. With the Sonata, in the lower
speeds, it got me there just fine but accelerating to faster speed, it
seemed to strain before it reached the speed I wanted to go , then was
fine. Maybe I'm just describing what a 4cyl car does, but that's what
gave me the feeling of "bottom of the line economy car".

Well, down at the bottom the superior Torque curve of the 2.4L I4 in
the Sonata (not to mention the 2.7L V6) will show off. Up top the
better power-to-weight ratio of the Elantra will start to shine.

What you said below was a little too technical for my base of knowledge.
Are you saying at slower speeds, the Sonata will "shine"; at higher
speeds, the Elantra will? I have to say, I took the Sonata out today
for a 60 mile ride on combination city streets and freeway, and it was
fun, especially on freeway. It seems to be a lighter car than my
Accord, and made it easier to change lanes and maneuver around cars.
When I changed lanes, the car actually came with me :). I can't imagine
how fun it would have been if it had been a manual transmission but I
don't even want to go there, because there's a lot of stop and go
traffic on So. Calif freeways and I had ten years of that with my old
Corolla.

Close enough. The truth is that both the 2.4L and 2.0L are both
powerful enough to get you where you're going. The only thing that
would make me take the 2.4L Sonata over the 2.0L Elantra is if more
than 2 people are going to ride in the vehicle on a daily basis. My
girlfriend's mom has an Elantra and it's a dog when you put 4 people
in it. The torquier engine in the Sonata will make it seem more
lively in daily driving. Hell, the V6 in my Sonata didn't even blink
when I had 900 lbs of passsengers in mine (although the ride was a
little rough with that much weight)

Conclusion: I said it before and I'll say it again. Unless you can
afford the V6 version of the Sonata with a few options, pick the
Elantra GT and load it up. You'll be happier. Oh, make sure you get
ABS (Package 8) though. I know a lot of people who are complaining
right now because they don't have ABS.

Jason,
I can afford the XG (I had initially planned for another Accord V6 so
even the XG would have saved a lot of money). It's more a matter of what
I would like. You may have answered this in earlier posts, I don't
recall, but did you choose the the Sonata V6 over the XG because it was
less expensive or preference, and why?

I bought the Sonata LX over the XG350 because I didn't want a car that
big. I wanted a vehicle with a V6 engine (or a Turbocharged I4) but I
didn't want to drive around in a boat. The Sonata is a nice
compromise of power and size. The only reason I would have had to get
the XG would have been the 5-speed Automatic (over the 4-speed Auto in
the Sonata).
