Elantra 0-60 in 8.5?
 

I assume this is with a stick. Is the Elantra stick as bad as I hear? Just
clunky or repair problems? Thanks.

I have an Elantra GLS with the five speed stick. I've had celica's and a mazda 323 in the past with five speeds and I'd say the Elantra is similar in feel and performance. I don't push my cars to the edge, though - couldn't say what the Elantra shifting is like when trying for a best "0-60".

I have an '03 GT, and the shifter is kind of notchy, for lack of a
better word. It is a little hard to shift smoothly during performance
driving, but for everyday stuff it's just fine. It has a tendency to
pop out of reverse every now and then, but I suspect that will be
fixed when I take it in for the oil change that's due.

Personally, I've never been an after-market mod guy, but the first thing I
did was to order and install a short-throw shifter in my 2003 GT. For me it
wasn't about jackrabbit starts, but rather the overall feel and comfort of
the shifting. The stock shifter was too long. It made me bump my elbow
against the seat in 2nd and 4th gears. And it just felt unnecessarily high
and sloppy.

With the more appropriate shifter, the rest of the car's sportiness can be
appreciated, and the GT is a great car all the way around.

I've noticed the same thing with Reverse not cooperating sometimes (at least
before I put in the short shifter). But why do you expect the oil change
will have an effect on it?

Heh heh! Poor wording on my part. I meant that I intend to have the
service department see if it's in need of adjustment while it's in for
the oil change.

Hhmmmm...What did you buy? I know there are a few kits out there,
but, not being an aftermarket modder either, I don't know much about
the different makers and options.

Same here. I'm not a rubber-burnin' kind of guy, but I do appreciate
sporty performance. And I'd *love* to get rid of that
came-out-a-gumball-machine shifter medallion.

B&M Racing was the only one I could find for my 2003 GT. Even though their
Web site stipulates only up to '01 (and they wouldn't confirm compatibility
on the phone), their #45119 fits and works perfectly in the '03.

Thank you muchly! I've got a directory in my bookmarks just for
Elantra stuff, and that link earned an instant inclusion. The shifter
kit itself will most likely find its way into my car after the
post-holiday poverty season is over.

Cool deal! I appreciate the help. There seems to be a lot more
aftermarket stuff showing up for this car, which is a testament to its
popularity and quality, I think. I'll never even consider most of it,
but a short-throw shifter and some cool wheels are on my list of
things to get.

This car strikes me as being as close to a true GT as one can get with
a four-door vehicle. Overcoming the limitations imposed on it by the
factory seems like the right thing to do. ;)
