Engine Codes from data port - odd results
 

My '99 Hyundai Elentra (automatic) (94k miles) started misfiring badly upon
startup this afternoon. Stopped, checked the oil. It was fine. I HAD
gotten gas about 30 miles before, but it didn't clear up... finally I
stopped at a parts store... they hooked up a diagnostic tool to the data
port and it read the following codes:

P1613 Manufacturer's Control Aux Input Aux Output
P0304 Misfire #4
P0722 Speed Sensor Circuit - no signal
P0734 Gear 4 Ratio Incorrect
P0733 Gear 3 Ratio Incorrect

The misfire #4 matched one hunch that maybe the sparkplug/wire was fouled or
bad..

I was wondering if the P1613 might be why it shifts oddly/races between 25
and 35 mph.

Anybody know whether the other 3 errors might just be due to the lack of
power caused by the misfiring 4th cylinder? Can't say what that Gear Ratio
would mean otherwise.

Any input would be appreciated.

P1613 is an error on the tcm-ecm communication line. Don't sweat it too
much if it clears and doesn't come back.

P0722, P0733, P0734 represent your shifting issue.
P0722 indicates a problem with the output speed sensor on the trans.
P0733, P0734 represent "slipping" in 3rd and 4th gears, but the computer
can't properly analyze this without proper data from the output speed
sensor.

Replace your pulse generators (input/output speed sensors together) and
don't reattach the connector to the mounting tab on the trans mount. This
will help prevent excessive wire tension. There's a technical service
bulletin with more detail at www.hmaservice.com.

I could not find the part name associated with the output speed sensor on
the tranny in the on-line parts places. What else might they call these?

Sorry. I forgot to mention it only works with exploder. Hyundai calls
them "pulse generators." Many dealers will have them in stock.

Got the part & got on line to see where it goes... Using a different
computer I was finally able to see the technical service bulletins on the
subject... hope that the TCM isn't bad too since the car's manufacture date
is October 1998, which puts it within the range of vehicles with the TSBs
stating that the TCM may need to be replaced.... wonder how much THAT costs.
(cheaper than a new tranny, I would surmise...)
