help! engine problems for a newbie!

i just got a 2000 sonata, and the engine has a tendency to shut off
while i’m idling at a stoplight. the key will still be in the "on"
position in the ignition, and the car will still be in drive, but the
engine is off. i have to put it in park, take the key out of the
ignition, and then re-start the car. it’s happened about four times
now, and it’s coupled with the "check engine" light coming on
periodically, and then turning off again after a couple of days.

this is my first car, and i’ve been confusing this with stalling, so
i’m a little confused about what i should think. thanks!

Check your diagnostic trouble codes in the engine management computer.
This will probably be your first hint.

If you have an autozone or similar outfit in your area that reads codes
for free, you could try that as opposed to paying someone for diagnostic
time.

Hyundaitech - - - Isn't this the symptoms that were exhibited when
Hyundai put out the recall/service bulletin about 4 or 5 years ago
whereby the dealers rerouted the wiring for the MAS?

Yeah, actually, that sounds about right. Thanks, Old_Timer. It's a good
idea to call the local dealer and see if there are any recalls (and get it
scanned, so you know what to expect). There's still several possible
problems which could have no relation to the recall.
