Helpl me make sense of these codes?

Hello,

I took my '01 Santa Fe to AutoZone today to get the codes for my Check
Engine light.

I was given the following:

P1529 - Vehicle Speed Idle Control, Aux. Input

P0715 - Input turbine speed sensor, a circuit malfunction

P0705 - Transmission range sensor circuit malfunction (PRNDL input)

I poked around on Alldata.com and www.hmaservice.com to no avail.

Any help here?

Thanks,
Jim

Problem details (from posting here of 06/21):

"I've got an '01 Santa Fe (6 cyl) with about 75k on it. Transmission is
acting weird.

Occasionally, when I first put it into "drive" the car will lurch forward
(as opposed to a smooth transition from neutral to drive). When it does
this, when I accelerate the car will change from 1st to 2nd smoothly enough
but lurches into 3rd gear.

After it lurches from 2nd to 3rd, the check engine light comes on the tranny
will not shift down to 1st again nor will it shift up to 4th (manually or
automatically). It seems to be stuck in some sort of "fail safe" mode where
it will only operate in 2nd and 3rd gear.

I can occasionally make it work again by turning the ignition off then crank
it up again. Usually not, though.

The problem seems worse when the ambient temperature is hot. Everything is
usually (but not always) fine until afternoon when it gets hot (in Alabama).

From hmaservice I found the following under the DTC/OBC-II tab,
transmission/transaxle folder, INSPECTION CHART FOR DIAGNOSIS CODES

Code P0715 input shaft speed sensor system (Pulse generator 'A')
Probable cause

If no output pulse is detected from the input shaft speed sensor for 1
second or more while driving in 3rd or 4th gear at a speed of 30 km/h
(19 mph) or more, it is judged to be an open circuit or short-circuit
in the input shaft speed sensor and diagnostic trouble code P0715 is
output. If diagnostic trouble code P0715 is the output four times, the
transaxle is locked into 3rd gear or 2nd gear as a fail-safe measure.
Malfunction of the input shaft speed sensor
Malfunction of underdrive clutch retainer
Malfunction of connector
Malfunction of the TCM

There was also something under the TS tab that mentions the lag and
lurch on the first shift.

Shocks when changing from N to D and large time lag
If abnormal shocks or a time lag of 2 seconds or more occur when the
selector lever is shifted from N to D range while the engine is
idling, the cause is probably abnormal underdrive clutch pressure or a
malfunction of the underdrive clutch, valve body or idle position
switch.
Abnormal underdrive clutch pressure
Abnormal low and reverse brake pressure
Malfunction of the underdrive solenoid valve
Malfunction of the valve body
**** Malfunction of the idle position switch **** which was one of
the codes that poped up

I didn't find anything about the transmission range sensor but it
might be there.

Good Luck

Thank you, Ed. You were a big help through this.

This doesn't seem to be as "simple" to identify as, perhaps, your similar
problem.

I'm gonna take her to the dealer. I now *think* I know enough to perhaps
not get gigged too bad when I take it in. ;)

Re: Helpl me make sense of these codes?

P0705 indicates a problem with the Transmission Range switch. Check to
make sure it is adjusted properly. If not, replace it. I think every car
but one or two with this code needed a range switch.

P0715 indicates a problem with the input speed sensor. Every car I've had
with this code needed a new sensor.

P1529 simply indicates that the TCM requested the ECM to turn on the check
engine lamp.

Man, you are an invaluable resource in this little group. Thanks.

Let me know if you ever have a computer problem and I'm your man. ;)

I'm having this same problem. So, how hard is it to replace an input speed
sensor on a 2000 Sonata GLS? Thanks in advance.
