hyundai access 1999 transmission
 

we purchased a used hyundai accent 1999 just 2 weeks ago. It started out
running fine but last week the transmission started acting funny. It did
not shift properly and it seemed like in between gears it would jump in
neutral for a split second. I was driving on the highway but the problem
started actually on a regular road during a lot of stop and go traffic. On
my way home on the highway it was the same thing. As soon as I had to slow
down and the car had to shift the problem reaccured. Once I got off the
highway, it acted normal again. I took it back to the dealer and tried to
explain what happend. He looked at the car for a good minute and told me
that I am supposed to drive with over drive off on highways and only put
in on in normal moving traffic, since highway drving puts to much pressure
on the engine. This just does not really make sense to me. Anybody have
some suggestions

**When he said that highway driving puts too much pressure on the
engine, you should've looked him in the eye for a good minute and
said: You, sir, are a dumbass. :) I'd bring it back and insist on
getting it fixed. What's next? Telling you not to drive up hills?

Honestly, Hyundai's can shift a bit wonky and I've read a lot of
complaints about it here but you should find out if the problem is
genuine. Also, I think that once you get up to speed on the highway,
it's easier on your engine than stop n' go. He's full of beans.

This doesn't sound normal. This sounds exactly like a transmission or a
transmission control problem.

I hope this wasn't a representative of the service department that told
you this. If this is a Hyundai dealer and the service department told you
this, NEVER take the car to be serviced there again.

Salespeople are often service idiots and have no idea what they are
talking about. If your car has not been inspected by a qualified service
department, take it to one pronto. Be sure to explain in detail when the
problems happened and how to recreate them.
