Hyundai Tiburon Speedometer Question
 

I have a 97 Tiburon.

My speedometer has stopped working. At the same time the speedometer
stopped working, the check engine light turned on.

The OBD test gave this reason for the check engine light:
"P0501 VSS Sensor Range/Part"

After a little looking around, I found out that VSS is Vehicle Speed Sensor.

So I am wondering what my problem could be?
Do I have a broken speedometer?
Or maybe a bad speedometer cable.

I called a Hyundai dealership and they told me it would cost about $800 to
fix the speedometer.

When I had the check engine light diagnosed, the mechanic said all I needed
was a new speed sensor, that connects to the transmission, which is only
about $50 plus labor.

Can anyone give me any advice here?

This may just be me, but if a speed sensor is only $50 or so, I'd buy one
myself and replace it on my own to see if that cleared up the problem. Not
sure how easy it would be to replace the sensor yourself, but it sure beats
paying the mechanic $800 or whatever to do the same thing. Heck, it could
merely be disconnect a lead, unscrew the old, screw in the new, reconnect
the lead.

Don't go to the dealer. What's the dealer's name?

The VSS is on the transmission, but keep in mind that the code does not
necessarily mean the part itself is faulty.

I spoke with the dealer again. I explained my problem to a person in the
Parts dept. They told me I could get a new VSS for $49.95. They told me
replacing the speedometer is what would be costly, but that shouldn't be
necessary.

Are these(Vehical Speed Sendor) easy to install/swap for 97 Tiburon's?

The car is a manual shift. (97 Hyundai).

If it's any help, I have a 2000 Sonata and the Tachometer went intermittent
and finally quit. I took apart the dash assembly where the speedometer and
tachometer and other gauges were. I disassembled the tach and tightened the
connection/mounting screws. I was able to get at least a quarter turn on
each one. (without over tightening)
That was early July. No problems since.
