intermittent Hyundai Accent starter problem
I have a 2001 Hyundai Accent L with 11000 miles. Occasionally (more
often lately) I run into this problem: I will try to start the car, and nothing happens. It does not crank, but sometimes (but not always) I hear a fan somewhere. I tried turning off everything electrical, and sometimes it starts right away. I have no idea if this helped or not. Sometimes it starts after I get out and bounce the front end up and down a few times, but not always. Sometimes waiting a couple of minutes works. There is plenty of juice in the battery, and I see no correlation to weather conditions or anything else. I took this to a dealer to be fixed under warranty, but he couldn't make it happen. Does anyone have any idea what might be happening? |
Re: intermittent Hyundai Accent starter problem
Check for a poor connection at the starter stud or solenoid terminal.

Re: intermittent Hyundai Accent starter problem
This may be due to a bad relay and or a defective start switch in the
ignition switch assembly. Anyway I would check the relays first and then go to the start switch on the ignition box. Re: intermittent Hyundai Accent starter problem
Is it an automatic transmission? If it is it could be the gearshift
safety switch (prevents starting except in "Park"). Try wiggling the gear shift when it won't start. |

Re: intermittent Hyundai Accent starter problem
I had a bad safety swtich on my 2004 Elantra GT that wouldnt let me start
the car.. the switch is on the clutch pedal.. to stop the car from beings started unless the clutch pedal was pushed in... might be an intermitant problem with that switch??? Pete.. The problem is solved. It got a lot worse, and I took it to the dealer again (3 years later), and it was fixed by replacing a switch. According to the printout I got, the "ignition lock switch on clutch pedal" was shorting out. On the phone, the service guy called it the "neutral safety switch". A little while back, I got stranded in a parking lot because the car wouldn't start, and the tow truck guy got it started by pushing down on the clutch pedal really hard. Things are fine now. |
