Issues with 1992 Sonata V6 GLE 3.0L (Check Engine Light... Sudden Power Loss)

Hi Everyone,

I have a 92 Hyundai Sonata V6 GLE 3.0L and basically have had this annoying
issue for almost a year. I've taken the car to numerous repair outlets, had
a Catalytic Convertor replaced for no change/difference whatsoever.

Basically what happens...

Can be driving at Cruising Speed on a Highway/Road, or going slowly around a
Roundabout and the Car Loses All Engine Power. Dials Report 0 RPM and the
Check Engine Light is immediately illuminated.

Most of the time, the Power is Restored within 1-2 Seconds. Sometimes the
Car Stalls and Requires Restarting (Usually only when travelling slowly)

As you can imagine, this makes driving quite unsafe.

Although it is a 92 Car, it has only completed around 90-100,000 kms.

If anyone has any ideas, I would be greatly appreciative.

Kind Regards

As long as electrical power is maintained, I'd primarily suspect the
optical sensor in the distributor. You'll find that an expensive
prospect, however, and it could also be a harness issue-- I've seen cases
of broken wiring inside the harness where wierd things occur when the
harness flexes-- or a power transistor issue.

I forgot to ask. Are any codes stored? The check engine lamp is a sign
that the ECM lost power and regained it. If you've got no codes, that
could very well be the issue. In that case, maybe just replace the ECM
relay and see if the problem goes away.

On the other hand, if you've got trouble codes, start with them.
