Maintenance Log Confusion

From Bones46@webtv.net
As you all know I am leasing a 2001 Accent GL. I keep all receipts from
every maintenance that is performed. But my maintenance log has me
baffled. One side is written in black that is to be performed every
7000 miles. The other directions in red for severe driving conditions. I
get my oil changed at a Quikee Lube place along with other minor
checkups. Should I just follow the black directions and have my oil
changed every 7000 miles or include the red directions and have the oil
changed every 3000 miles to be cautious? Every 15,000 I have to do the
whole thing with every fluid and mechanics checked out. What does
everybody do about this? Bob

Depends on how you drive. Read further as it explains what severe
driving consists of. Actually, many people fall into the severe
driving conditions. Unless you live out in the country and drive it 10
miles one way and then 10 back you probably are in that category. I
drive a lot of stop and go city driving but I do intermingle highway
driving plus my car fully warms up, even in the winter, during my 13
mile drive to work. I change my oil and filter myself (Mobil Synthetic
+ Mobil filter) every 5000 miles. If in doubt change it more often.
It's a cheap price to pay for engine longevity.

Your best bet is to change your oil every 3k miles.

I'm not real sure about this. I really believe that the oil companies
are behind the brain washing of Americans so their profits will go up
by people wasting perfectly good oil. The drain this puts on our
natural resources, as well as our pocketbooks, may prove to be proof
in the long run. I have always changed my oil every 5 to 7 k miles and
never have had a motor go bad. Other problems with cars yes, but never
a blown motor. I put at least 100 to 150 k miles on all my cars, so in
the long run, running the oil for 5 to 7 k miles hasn't seemed to be a
problem. I do mostly city driving, and mostly short trips. And when I
do get my oil changed, it isn't sludge or really bad. It's just normal
used oil. And after the changes, it stays a nice amber color for
awhile. It's not like I'm leaving sludge behind. I have seen people
who don't change their oil and when they finally do, it goes black
almost right away. That is when I know they didn't change it often
enough.
Doing the math, the money saved is not that great. At an average of
$25 per change, over 100,000 miles, you would need 34 changes doing it
every 3000 miles. Total = $850.
Changing it every 6000 miles would give you 17 changes making the
total $425.
Not a very significant amount of money compared to a new motor, but it
would put much less of a strain on our precious natural resources,
even with the recycling of the old oil.
