PowerStart P9000 in 2000 Sonata
The 2000 Sonata I just bought from a used car dealer has a security system in it. It says PowerStart on the keychain/remote and I think that I have determined that it is made by G.I.T. Security Products and is probably their model P9000A. (I have an automatic transmission.) <http://www.gitsecurity.com/eng/products/feature.asp?ProductID=P-9000&ManualID=sorry&ManualID=P-9X00_owner&WireID=sorry> The remote has two buttons, on red and one green. The red button activates (and deactivates) a feature that makes it so turning the key in the ignition will not start the car. When ignition is enabled by pressing the red button again the doors also unlock. When ignition is disabled the doors lock. Approximately 30 seconds after enabling ignition and unlocking the doors, if the car is not actually started, it will revert to the ingnition disabled/doors locked mode on its own. The green button actually starts the car even when there is no key in the ignition. There is no alarm involved as far as I can see. I downloaded the P9000A manual from their web site. It says that there is a way to defeat the ignition disabler so that valet parking can be done. But when I go through their procedure (start the car via the remote, step on brake and push red button 3 or more times) it does indeed turn off the ignition disabler but then it comes back on on its own in 30 seconds. I'd like to defeat it permanently if I could. If I can't do that I'll just have it removed. I've been told that removal should cost around $40.00. Anybody out there have any experience with these things? There appear to be a few programmable features to this system but I think they are only accessible from the PowerStart unit itself, inside the car somewhere. But I can't see it anywhere. Anybody know where this unit resides? It doesn't appear to be under the hood or in the trunk or inside the passenger compartment. -- Joey Goldstein http://www.joeygoldstein.com joegold AT sympatico DOT ca |

I just had it removed, or at least defeated. Cost me $40.00 CDN to do. That thing was a drag. And being able to start the car without the key from many feet away was just creepy. If I ever accidentally pushed that green button the car could be running all day without me knowing it. The radio antenna on the windshield is still there though. It looks like taking it out would be a major pain. -- Joey Goldstein http://www.joeygoldstein.com joegold AT sympatico DOT ca |
