My 2002 Santa Fe does the same thing. No plausible explanation so
far.

Maybe there is some built in thing where if the key isn't in the ignition
it locks itself to prevent it being left unlocked while unattended?

Re: Elantra GT self locks

On my Sonata MY2002 this happens if I open the car with remote and then wait
for more than about 60 secs; of copurse it does not happen if I enter the
car.
On my previuis Sonata MY1993 it happened sometimes (and once with keys
inside car!) especially in summer, may be some false contact on locks..
