Santa Fe cold startted happening
 

Santa Fe 2004 2.7 FWD 41k miles

This problem started happening about two weeks ago. I've been having
troubles cold starting as in it requires me to give it some pumping of
the peddle to get it started. When the engine is warm it seems to start
ok. No engine lights or other alarms.

My family has four Santa Fe's; two '04's and two '05's that have never
had any starting troubles what-so-ever.

When changing the oil tonight I noticed that the air box clamps where
not latched but the air filter was clean.

Any clues?

Does the engine crank at normal speed?
Does the engine crank for an excessively long time?

Yes it does.

Before it starts, yes. I hooked up a meter to the battery and it
checked out a-ok.

I'd primarily suspect that the fuel pressure regulator has gone bad and is
allowing the fuel pressure to bleed off while the engine is off.

Makes sense to me as I have to slam the peddle to the board to start it.

Is this something that is user serviceable? I have the full-on warranty
but if I can avoid the downtime of bringing it to the dealer all the better.

You can do it yourself. It's attached to the end of the fuel rail.

A couple things to consider, though:
1. We haven't done a proper diagnosis. That would involve attaching a
fuel pressure gauge and checking fuel pressure to see whether it bleeds
off.
2. If you do the repair yourself, you'll have to pay for the parts.
Warranty repairs are free (other than the inconvenience).

Just got a call from Hyundai....yup, it was the fuel pressure regulator.
Took them all of 10 mins to fix and covered under the warranty.
