Scoup- Good student car?
 

Hey, I'm looking to get a car that wouldn't be in the shop every other week,
and would get great gas milleage.

I've noticed a lot of 1991-1995 Scoups in the paper going for $1500 - $4000
Canadian. ( I guess that's like $1000 - 2500 USD??)

Are these a bargain buy for a student, or will they explode within a week?

Any opinions are appreciated.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a Hyundai that old, especially since you're
a student. For me, an unexpected repair bill would be annoying, but
for you it might be crippling. Hyundai, in my opinion, has only really
begun making good cars in the last few years. Much as I like my 2003
Elantra, I think you'd be better off with a Honda or Toyota if you're
going to buy a 10-year-old vehicle. I wouldn't have bought a new
Hyundai in 1991-1995, so you probably shouldn't buy a used one.

Okay there's more to it now.
A friend of mine who has a 1994 turbo model is selling it off for $1000
Canadian, but it's at 210,000kms.
The value becomes greater because now I'm looking at a 1994 for even
cheaper, but your statement about the reliability also becomes more valid as
the car has such high kms on it.
It has a new clutch and recently replaced tranny.
The front driver side head light is smashed, needs to be replaced, small
dent beside it.

The question is, can I even go wrong for $1000? If it gets me around for a
year then dies, did I even waste the $1000?

My son had a '94 Scoupe and it was quite solid, at least until he wrecked
it. I'd avoid a Turbo model on any brand of vehicle - I've heard too many
horror stories.
