Sonata Emission Monster

Well the poor thing did not pass her emissions test today.

For the 'pretend' it's driving part

HC ppm 152 allowed 69 FAIL
CO% .11 allowed .38 PASS
NO ppm 900 allowed 518 FAIL

For the curb idle

HC ppm 290 allowed 200 FAIL
CO% 1.74 allowed 1.00 FAIL

Also if it had a carb I would have said it's running rich from the smell
and the look of the tail pipe.

Any clues where to start. Do these readings lead to a particular direction?

Other vehicles had a check engine or similar light that would come on,
can't find one on this thing. Some web site says use analog meter and
count pulses from tester plug.

Thanks

Re: Sonata Emission Monster

Do you have the 2.0 four or 3.0 six?

On either one, since you have an NOx failure, you should check egr and
thermostat for proper function and ignition timing. You do have a check
engine lamp. It should come on for five seconds when the key is turned to
the "on" position. If it doesn't, you also have a problem with the lamp.
Whether on or not, you should check to see if you have any error codes.
You can hook an analog voltmeter between the ground terminal of the
diagnostic connector and the engine diagnosis terminal. The engine
diagnosis terminal is in the corner opposite the ground terminal. You
should get two digit codes in long sweeps followed by short sweeps. Once
you reach the end of the code string, it will restart at the beginning.
E.g. 2 long sweeps followed by one short sweep is code 21. Continuous
short sweeps represents no code.

Two problems then, the lamp and my eyes. The lamp dosn't come on & I
can't tell where it should be.

It should be somewhere in the cluster area. I believe it's at the bottom,
but -- memory -- not -- as -- good -- as ten years ago. Do you have the
2.0 or the 3.0?

I have the 2.0
I have even used a pencil beam flashlight to find check engine, no luck.

Presently there are no error codes in the computer anyway.

Thermostat just changed, timing is good. (EGR ???- don't have a vacuum
pump to check)

Planning to change cat converter next and see. And may be get my hands
on some denatured Alcohol like someone suggested.
