Sonata Odometer
 

Hi everyone, I am buying a used 2001 Sonata. It has done 15,000 kilometres
according to the clock (I am in Australia) but I am a bit suspicious. How
easy would it be to fiddle the odometer so it shows 15,000 kilometres rather
than say...115,000 kilometres?

Look for other signs of wear such as worn rubber on the gas and brake
pedals. 15,000 is not much and the car should look almost brand new
including the engine if it's only gone that far. However if it has gone
115,000 km, and parts have been replaced, they will look too new. Can't you
ask for the all the service records? If not, maybe avoid it and get one that
you can verify. Because really - why risk buying something if you can't
trust the person at all? It's against the law to turn the odometer back.

Rolling back the odometer on a modern car is easier said than done.
It requires specialized equipment that would only be available at a
dealer or service shop (or to someone with an extra few thousand USD
to spend).
