speaker size for 2003 Elantra GT
 

Does anyone know what speaker sizes are in the GT? Crutchfield only lists
front, but I don't trust it too much... Thanks!

I believe the sedan has 6 x 9s in the back, but the hatchback is indeed
all 6.5 or 6.75 (either will fit, I think). The tweeters should be 1".
I had a set of Alpine SPR-176As installed in front without incident
(they sound good too).

On a related note - any idea what stock head unit is pumping out? I'm
debating whether to replace all 6 speakers and keep HU or just the front
ones and a head unit...

In terms of watts per channel? I don't know, but it doesn't
necessarily matter, because the sensitivity of the speakers, the
acoustics of the car, how much road and wind noise, and how loud you
like to play the stereo will all be big factors also. Watts are only
part of the picture.

For any car, unless there is something you really wrong with the HU, I
would start by replacing the front speakers with better speakers
you've heard and picked out a local dealer. The fronts are the
speakers the driver and front passenger will be hearing, much more
than the other speakers.

From there, you could continue working towards the back of the car and
replacing the speakers. That will improve the sound further.

Assuming the HU is working correctly, replacing the HU shouldn't make
much difference in sound quality.

Of course, if the HU isn't working correctly (in which case you might
be eligible for warranty service) and/or the HU does not provide the
functions/features you want, then you should replace the HU.

What would I do, if I were you?

1. Experiment with balance, tone, and other controls on HU to see if
you can improve the sound.
2. If the above doesn't help, replace the front speakers with speakers
you've heard and like better.
3. If the above doesn't help, then start replacing the other speakers.
4. If the above doesn't help, replace the HU.

BTW, if you want serious bass, you'll need to add a powered subwoofer.
Your audio dealer can show you some powered subs that would work and
also fit in your trunk.

You might want to work with a local audio dealer and let them advise
you and install everything. Car stereo installation can be
surprisingly tricky and having a pro install everything can make a big
difference in looks and sound.
