Thoughts on a 2007 Elantra
 

This is a pretty general request for opinions on the 2007 Elantra. My
local dealer here in nothern Illinois has one for $13,800 (advertised),
with manual transmission, cd and alarm. This seems like a good
starting price (yeah, I'm gonna haggle), and I'm wondering if anybody
has any thoughts.

And a much more specific question: What is the dealer cost for the
added 10yr bumper-to-bumper warranty? I'm debating it, but it's nice
to know that they consider it to be worth "X" dollars and to point that
out to them when they ask for more.

I've stopped by the dealership once and drove the car, but I was both
pressed for time and hadn't done any homework yet, so I didn't start
into any price negotiations.

What are you wanting thoughts on - the price, or the car in general.

Although Consumer Reports is not everybody's favorite magazine, for better
or worse, they just reviewed the new Elantra recently, and gave it very high
marks (that one had an automatic).

Pricewise, you can do better.

As for the 100,000 mile warranty - an utter waste of money.

Actually, both. I'm a fan of the Elantra (I have an 01 with 140K
miles) but 07 was the 1st year of the redesigned body. I suppose it's
a little early for them to be "notorious" for some problem, but I
thought I'd ask.

As for price, I shouldn't have brought it up here yet since I haven't
done any negotiations yet. The 13,800 was just the ad price. I'll
come back after I've done some negotiation and see what's up. I found
the dealer cost and that there's currently a rebate, so I'll see what I
can get.

In retrospect it was a vague initial posting, but thanks for your
input. I'm sure I'll be back soon with a more specific question.

The vehicle is largely similar. The major differences are a new automatic
transmission (which wouldn't affect the manual) and electronic power
steering. The power steering does feel a little different, so make sure
you drive one so you understand the feel before purchasing. A no-brainer
improvement in my opinion. Remove pump, lines, all fluid. Seems like the
system should be much more reliable.

I have one and like it. It is the manual and is surpisingly nimble and fun
to drive in my opinion. I would definately recommend the manual over the AT
but that is just a personal preference. As far as the price I would have to
ask if the model you looked at is GLS, SE, or Limited?

It was the GLS. Yeah, that'd be a good price for the Limited, but
unfortunately it was not the case.

I suggest edmunds.com for a "what people are paying" price estimate in
your area. You input the options and details it gives you a price which
is an average of recent sales. I think they have some guidelines on what
to pay for a warranty also on their site. But why buy more warranty with
the factory 10/100,000 powertrain and 6/60,000 "bumper to bumper"?

That being the case, I'd say that the 13 and change that was quoted is
probably not completely unreasonable. Check www.edmunds.com.
