Trajet Radiator Top Cover Seal
 

Today my radiator burst its top cover seal. Spraying coolant all over the
motorway. Engine then overheated and limped very slowly to a lay-by. Left to
cool, limped to garage bough lots of water re-filled, and limped the 6 miles
home.

Looking at the radiator while at home the top cover is plastic and its
leaking badly from the metal fingers holding the topcover on. So I suspect
there is a rubber seal in there somewhere that burst.

Is it easy to fix, or do i need a whole new Rad??

Can't speak for your ride as we don't have Trajets here in the U.S.,
but most Hyundai radiator failures I've seen have involved a crack or
break in the top plastic tank. I've heard of shops replacing the tank
or seal, but have also heard that there have been problems with repeat
failures in these cases. Not knowing where you're located, I don't
know the relative impact of parts vs. labor, either.

Can't speak for your ride as we don't have Trajets here in the U.S.,

Many thanks. I am in Italy. Local Hyundai want 570 Euros + Tax. I have
ordered a whole new rad from UK for 89.99 sterling.

For now I have covered the area in resin and is solid. The car is restricted
to going to school and back about a mile each way, till its fixed properly.

Also left the coolant reservoir top loose so there pressure cant build and
burst it. Coolant is still flowing and getting hot in the Rad so its still
working to a degree. Enough to go to school and back for the next week while
I wait for the new Rad.

Rad arrived, and is now in the garage for fitting. The resin topped old rad
is still holding firm.

One thing that did get secondary damage due to excess heat getting the car
home initially, was the spark plugs were damaged.

Intermittent mis fires, replaced them with some old ones in the drawer from
a Vauxhall Vectra and running well again. Not the exact type, but spark gap
similar, thread the same, just thin instead of thick bolts (Good job I have
both sizes of Spark plug wrench).

Ordered new ones of the proper type.
