Transmission Repaired, but New Problem
It began that I had a problem when my 2001 Hyundai Accent GS Automatic
reached 55 MPH and began it's 5th and final shift. It would shift kinda funny, so I took it in to the dealer, who ran the computer on it and found indeed I had a transmission problem. Took it to a independant transmission place and had the needed work done, since their work estimate was less. And the mechanic came with alot of personal recommendations from people I know. However, they had my car for nearly two weeks due to a problem that showed up AFTER the repair. The original problem is gone. The problem is is that when you go to stop at the stoplight and it shifts down, the last shift down to first is hard and there is a thunk sound. My mechanic has been trying all this time to find out from Hyundai the information he needs to make the right adjustments to make this thunk go away. Getting infor from them I'm sure you all probably know has been like getting information from the FBI. Anyway, he's having a hell of a time finding out what to do about this, so I thought what the hell, I'll ask y'all. I got my car back and he wants to try something this weekend that he think might find the problem, but is still looking for information on how to fix this thing. Thanks in Advance Ken |

I should add that I got a theory tonight and tested it. The downshift
problem disappears when the overdrive is off. Thanks, I'll let the mech know and see if he's tried that. Clue me in:
Our 2001 machines' transmissions are covered by the factory for only 50,000 or for 100,000 miles--i assume 50,000, but if it's 100,000, then what's with the private shop stuff ? |

Bought it used in 2003 and it only had a 60K mile warranty.. my mileage was

The 10/100 is for the original owner only.

An improperly reading throttle position sensor can cause this. Internal
problems in the trans can cause this as well. |

Sorry if I had a premature post. I couldn't tell.
To my knowledge, self authorization isn't something which can be enrolled in, it's a status given by Hyundai and that the requirements for that status vary by factory rep. In fact, I'd never heard of the acronym HSA prior to reading the post. Based on how things work around here, I feel pretty certain saying we're not self authorizing. It's my experience that Hyundai has little sympathy for anyone other than the original owner, but at the customer's reported mileage, we probably could have gotten him some sort of assistance if we'd ask. Our rep is rather receptive to reasonable requests. The guy was less than 100 miles out of warranty, for goodness sake! I think there are some reps who say no to just about everything. I've heard reports of this from techs at other dealers. But it's my guess that the dealer didn't want to offer him any help and thus didn't ask. |

I thank you for that. I notice that the problem doesn't happen at all when I
turn off the overdrive. And I noticed the fell when I turn off the overdrive will driving is the same feeling I get from the car when I have it on and am almost at a complete stop - when the car shifts down the first. Hyundai repaired the transmission in my Excel when it was 4,000 miles out of warranty. Not only that, they paid to have it done at a transmission shop, rather than through the local dealer. You should NOT have to pay for this repair, unless it was due to neglected maintenance or abuse. |
