Varible Dealer Warranty Policies

For what it might be worth, I had a headlight bulb burn out in my 2001
Elantra when it had about 50,000 miles on it. I took it to the local
dealer and he charged me $22.58 to replace it stating bulbs are a
consumable item and not covered under the warranty.

A few months later I was out of town and had a different headlight
bulb fail. I went to the closest dealer prepared to pay through the
nose since I was in a resort area. To my surprise when I went to get
my keys from the service department they said, "No charge, you just
made it under the wire on your 60,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty."

Later on while shopping for a new Sonata I went to a third dealer for
a price and told him of my experience. He said the place that charged
me was guilty of double dipping... collecting from the factory and
from the owner for the same job.

Moral to the story: Find out before the work is done if it is going
to be covered by the warranty. If they say, "No," but you think it
should come under the warranty, check with a second dealer. You may
be pleasantly surprised.

Headlamp bulbs are covered by the 5/60 bumper to bumper warranty. Any
other bulb is 1/12. The second dealer was correct. I doubt the first
dealer was double dipping, they probably didn't know any better and were
too busy/ignorant to look it up and so they charged you instead of
Hyundai.
