Like most other open source products, it's butt ugly.

If car manufacturers would lean toward standardization, prices would
drop, cars would sell, and profits would possibly even rise.

You should be able to go to a parts store and say "Give me an
alternator". The clerk would say "You want small or large?".

Same with starters, wheels, radiators, fuel pumps, wiper motors, brake
pads, rotors, etc. Just make 2 or 3 sizes of everything.

WTF? You don't own the car, you just license it, and have to tell them
about any mods, which they will then add to the car and sell that way?
Are these people on crack?

It should work well, just like Plug 'n Play on computers. It would also
detract from improvements in design and performance. There are benefits,
but there are also potential problems. There is room for plenty of
improvement though.

It's a standard open source license - any improvements you make have
to go back into the original project.

To be more specific - you own the car like you own the "free" software
in Linux. Any design changes you make have to be fed back to the
project. Other than that it is yours to do with as you like.

You do know you do not own your commercial software don't you? It's
licensed for an unknown time subject to the whim's of the license
holder.
