XG350 problems

As an owner of a 2002 XG350L with a multitude of problems over my 22
months of ownership and 20,000 miles (replacement of four
transmissions, reprogramming TCM, brakes rebuilt several times, sun
visor replaced three times, window trim leaks and problems, power seat
track play, turn signal sticking, cruise control not working, speakers
buzzing, trim pieces with defects, poor idle, etc.) I am curious if
other owners have had problems like this. I would never recommend this
car to other yet a friend bought one and has had no problems with his.
I think I may have got the only "lemon" in this model.

Re: XG350 problems

This is not the norm. I don't think I've replaced a single XG
transmission, although there were some known problems for the 2001 model,
I've really seen very few issues.

Transmission failures tend to be more frequent in major metropolitan
areas, one of which I reside in, but 4 transmissions in 20K is
ridiculous.

The only complaint I think I recognize as common by my standards is the
poor idle.

Re: XG350 problems

I just had the power steering hose replaced yesterday on my '02.
Nonetheless, wouldn't your car be covered by your state's lemon law?

Re: XG350 problems

The laws vary from state to state. In my state, I believe 20,000 miles is
outside the lemon law provision.

Re: XG350 problems

The Magnuson Moss act does apply to my problems. I was just wondering
if others had same problems.

My XG350 is now only a couple of months old but no problems. Runs like
a dream.

Re: XG350 problems

I have 30K miles on my 02 XG350L. It has no more "problems" then the
day I bought it with 8 miles on it brand new. My complaints (which are
common):
1. Idle rough
2. Lungeing from a stop (hard to accellerate gracefully).

Other than that (and I knew both of those when I bought it) the car is
fine.

Re: XG350 problems

Have you had the ECM reprogramming done yet (TSB 02-36-007)?

Re: XG350 problems

You can feel some vibration in the passenger compartment at idle. That
just seems to be the way the car is.

I've not spent a large amount of time driving xg's, but I figured the
throttle response was just a matter of learning the correlation between
the throttle input and the electronic throttle.

Re: XG350 problems

They say that they have done it, I guess I have no way of knowing. The
1st shop in Ontario, CA. (Romero Hyundai) claims it did not qualify
for it as it was made in 04/02. I took it to Glendora Hyundai and they
claimed to have done it after complaining to them just to try it.

Re: XG350 problems

That is true on that car, but what I complain about is the car will
change RPM on it's own. Whith a light touch of the gas (and not moving
my foot a micron) the car will randomly "give itself gas" like I moved
my foot on the pedal but I never moved. Very similar to a bad
accellerator pump on a old carbarator (I have worked on cars for many
years). I suspect a bad or nosiy TPS or similar input device, but I
have never swapped it. The ide issue, is random also. 80% of the time
it is rough, 20% smooth as silk. Typically when hot.

Re: XG350 problems

As this car is "drive by wire," there is an accelerator position sensor on
the right front fender as well as the throttle position sensor on the
throttle. I'd be more inclined to suspect the accelerator position
sensor, but without a check engine lamp or DTC, this is a rather spotty
guess.

I believe the roughness is present only at certain rpm's. It may just be
that the engine mounts don't filter these frequencies well.

XGCA 04-14-2004 11:11 PM

Re: XG350 problems

I agree with your diagnosis, I assume that is the sensor I look at
with the spring on it that the cable is connected to. I always said I
was going to go to a junk yard and buy one and swap it out, but I have
never done it yet.

Re: XG350 problems

I bought a 2002 with 9200 miles on it out of lease. It does nothing but run
like a stripped assed ape. Excellent car. No trouble yet of any kind 20,000
mi. on it now. I bought the 100 k warranty because i didn't know anything
about the Hyundai. The only two things I have against it is that you can't
see the miles on the speedomer display in the daylight, and the AM radio is
not worth a diddley damn. 5 miles top range on a 5,000 watt am station.
Worthless pieces of that they might as well have added a three dollar
transister radio to hang from the rear view mirror.
