1990 eagle talon
my good friend just bought a 1990 eagle talon tsi and it need new rings on it...now does anyone know where i could get the motor rebuilt or where i could get some rings or even pistons ?? any options you guys can think of let me know...btw car still runs fine just wont pass emission ...thanks again

Your best bet would be to replace it with a JDM engine.
|
If you are going to pull the engine apart to replace piston rings than you may as well replace main/crank/rod bearings, headgasket, valve stem seals ect. Basically a full rebuild.
So yea you are better off buying a JDM 4g63 if you can find a good one. Search "used jap" on 411.ca for a bunch of import shops that can supply and install engines/parts. |
rings
I guess my first question would be how do you know it needs rings? Not to be a sarcastic prick..:)
If you say a compression test and the numbers weren't all the same it could be casued by a valve seat, seal etc. |

If you say a compression test and the numbers weren't all the same it could be casued by a valve seat, seal etc. You can also check for blowby, with the engine on remove the oil cap and look for vapour. Look at the exhaust while the car is on, blue smoke is oil. |
OK well ill looking into a jdm engine ...thanks guy and i know its the rings because we had ti checked out in a local shop..but you never know thanks for all the advice guys and ill keep you updated
|
Or you could just buy a wideband O2 controller and a fuel controller for $600 or less and tune your car yourself whenever you want, however you want. There is no way in hell I would trust a shop to tune my car, especially if I couldn't monitor it.
Slight change in weather could drastically throw off your AFR's and cause you to melt a piston, depending how aggressively they make the tune. |
i wouldn't reccomend getting a jdm motor, get it rebuilt instead, that way u will know it will have perfect compression
|
i would also recommend rebuilding it, i bought a jdm used talon engine and it blew couple months later, didnt seem right from the start
|
are jdm engines as prone to crankwalk as the usdm ones? or are they a better choice to go with? these motors dont seem like they can go 50k kms without something blowing ..
|
try toronto dsm board

Most talons go up to 300k, some up to 400k. Its just everyone beats the crap out of them and expects them to last. |
You can try the dealership
|
If your interested in getting it rebuilt i have an excellent dsm engine specialist that is local and is fair in pricing, built my race motor and many of my customers as well.
|
i agree with the JDM swap
|
personally i would get a used Usdm engine from the dsm board if i could find a fairly low mileage good condition one, but other then that get a long block from a jdm engine supplier. Don;t worry about having a bad experince with an engine... as long as you look it over carefully, compression test it and leak down result done infront of you its all good.
|
i think either way you go it'll cost yah, i think just figure out what u want and go with it...

JDM engine and Udsm engines as they are called are the same thing accept lettering on the valve cover, and intake manifold (accept the vr-4 galant ones have bigger injectors, and turbo ) getting your engine rebuilt with some new internals, gasket ect. seems like a better idea then getting a jdm ( which is what i have in my car bought swaped alredy, and needs a rebuild )
Also, your friend will it is new and safe, on magnus' site it says 700 for a rebuild http://www.magnusmotorsports.com/engines/dsm.htm idk what that entails.. |
same i also agree
|
i think you should get the engine swapped simply because if you put all that money into rebuilding the engine its just not worth it. my first car was an eagle talon (1990) turbo and the engine went on me once. so i got a jdm engine. it cost me about $1000 to get it and install it. rebuilding it would come up to almost or even more than 1000 just for parts alone.
good luck |
