1g or not?

hey i'm thinking of getting a 93-94 talon i was wondering if you guys can tell me about some common problems with them or even your overall opinion on their reliability. Also i was wondering how much a full 4g63t swap would cost with part and labour...an estimate would be good. thanks:veryhappy

crazyae 04-25-2007 06:12 PM

personally i am sure you going to get alot of opinions on this one. The talon sounds like a nice car ... AWD 2.0L turbo, but i have seen first hand experiences and have worked on them to have a valid enough opinion. I think that they are good cars with an abundance of aftermarket parts. however reliablity really gets to me with these cars. You really have to do things right with these cars with maitence and performance as your results are really shown clear.

Good luck to you if you purchase one and be patient with it.

not a problem let me know how it works out.

I love DSM's myself. If I were you I would look for a AWD Turbo right off the bat, I wouldnt even think about swaping in a motor after I bought it. also if you get the late 92 talons they come with 4 bolt axels, so thats a plus.

There are many people that say these cars spend more time on the jack stands than on the pavement, but if you really love the car and take care of it it'll last.

If you get one keep us posted, I wouldn't mind seeing it.

BLAKOUT88 04-27-2007 11:14 PM

thnx gonad but if i got it i would swap in the engine ...you guys are starting to scare me with the stuff you said i want to be able to drive my car everyday i dont want to be wondering if it will start or not:smilie_d0 but havent made up my mind yet i may still get one

toofast 04-27-2007 11:42 PM

talons

from my personal experience it is better to get the tsi right from the get go swapping in a motor is worthless for the same amount of money your gonna spend on the swap u could get the awd turbo trust me i thought when i bought a 94 esi it was a great deal but then i found out the swap was insane

have heard this many times. even if it's not an AWD a tsi is still better than an esi. If your really serious about buying a talon, go look in the US, they have tons and for good prices, especially now since the dollar is so closely matched.

hahah hey dont be affraid to get your hands dirty, yeah it might have a couple of bugs, but there is nothing like launching so hard that your windshield wipers come on. Dont be discouraged, they're usually worth it.

green-eg 04-28-2007 08:56 AM

hey i got a 91 tsi awd turbo automatic for sale for 1200.00 obo the car is in decent shape and runs good. i also got a buddy whose sellin his 95 tsi awd 5spd w/ to4e turbo hedder style manifold external wastgate, coilovers rims new paint..... but he's askin like 8600.00 if ur interested in either one pm me for more details

BLAKOUT88 04-28-2007 06:47 PM

thnx gonads for ur advise i guess the best thing is to find a tsi but its hard to find some with low kms but then again i can always rebuild it and will cost me WAY less than a swap...1 thing though is rebuilding really that good i always think that under it all its stil the same old engine?...and i want a manual tsi sorry but thanx for the offer thass a really good price

Gonads 04-28-2007 07:00 PM

well really it depends on what u rebuild... u could rebuild the whole motor and the only thing "old" will be the block and the head, but all the parts that are assembeled with in them will be brand new. and plus when you rebuild, the block and head should be machined to better specs... so tecnically it will be a better flowing design and depending on the parts you put in, it will be a stronger motor over all.... there are alot of different things that are involved.

tsi's come with enough power as is, you wont necessarily have to re-build... i say if u can get an AWD ur set.

jdmsteR 04-28-2007 07:42 PM

what does everyone here think about the talon tsi FWD models?
they seem to be good daily driver's with some pep and are still okay on gas..

BLAKOUT88 04-28-2007 09:44 PM

i think their good but if i had a choice i wud definately get awd better handling

fousse69 04-29-2007 02:32 AM

well first off i have had a1990 talon tsi awd and a 1993 tsi awd i think u r better off going with the first gen's cause the 7 bolt block have crank walk so the 6 bolt is alot better and if u really wanna do it right put the second gen(1995-1998)pistons on the big 1g rods alot lighter and stronger and having a 4 bolt rear end is a plus aswell the 92-84 talon tsi would be ur best bang 4 ur doallar plus some come with dual piston calipers aswell i have lots of dsm parts if u need any so....pm me if u want

Gonads 04-29-2007 08:36 AM

I vote AWD, cuz ther is nothing like a 4500rpm launch with traction annnnnnnndddddddddddddd, we live in canada! done deal!

89daytona 04-29-2007 10:42 AM

AWD is a nessesity, unless you wana do a burnout all day

BLAKOUT88 04-29-2007 12:40 PM

damz never realized their so many dsm fans out here lol...atleast i know if i get a 1g it wont be hard to get advise:smilie_da

jdmsteR 04-29-2007 04:26 PM

what kinda mileage are all you tsi AWD guys gettin?

89daytona 04-29-2007 07:47 PM

Mine is 285 something

fousse69 04-29-2007 08:38 PM

i got about 200 000 out of a stock motor after it hit 180 xxx k's i turned up the boost and started buying alot of oil...lol so keep the boost low it will run forever

booster_tsi 05-07-2007 12:13 PM

Don't listen to people talking trash about 1g 7 bolt engines. They are as reliable as 6 bolt ones. I can atest to that as I have over 300k km on a stock engine and still ticking strong.
I've had mine since 160K and it's been the most reliable car I have ever owned. It's boosted far beyond factory specs and I beat on it all the time.
Of course, the rings/seals are pooched but as long as you keep adding oil when it leaks out it'll run forever.
I have a TSI FWD and when I take it easy I can easily get 500km out of a tank.

And let me guess, your not using an ACT2600 or < clutch?

Definatly go 1G.......possible the best for the $ on the planet!!!

booster_tsi 05-09-2007 04:25 PM

I am using stock AWD clutch, but if the clutch puts enough pressure on the crank to wear out the main bearings that there is something wrong with the clutch not the motor.

That right there explains alot. Its very rare for a crank to walk with a stock clutch, especially with the early 7-bolt motors (mid92-94). Throw in a stronger clutch and don't disconnect your clutch switch and your asking for trouble on a 7-bolt.

booster_tsi 05-10-2007 08:38 AM

My clutch switch has been disconnected for years ;o)

DSMonster 05-10-2007 08:39 AM

Must be that stock clutch saving you, LOL..........j/k

darryloake 07-13-2007 03:31 PM

hey, i have a 93 awd tsi and these cars definetly get a lot of bad mouthing cuz the tools that own them dont do any maintnence and try to get 400hp out of them just putting bigger turbos with bullshit tuning so the key is to go out find a tsi awd dont even bother trying to swap turbo into an esi cuz ur gonna spend a lot of money for a peice of crap car thats hardly as fast as a tsi. it would be easier to find a fwd car with a good drivetrain then an awd you definetly gotta do your research on these cuz they can be a handfull if your more worried about your blow off valve then general maintnence find out common problems with 1gs and 2gs if you got a 2g then yes swap the motor to a 6bolt-1990-1992motor or a 1gb 7bolt. if you buy a tsi awd 2g you will find out pretty fastwhy their motor is not good. make sure you take the car for a drive before you buyit if you cant drive then dont waste your money you need to feel how it drive and how the tranny shifts becuase trannys can easily need new synchros. hopefully some of that helps your decision and FAQlocator should be able to answer any questions you have on dsms good luck

spooolin 08-28-2007 07:28 PM

these cars are definitly a love hate relation ship.. If you go in thinking its a high maintence GF then you will be fine..treat her with respect, do all the required maintence, its ok to ride her hard.. just tell her you love her before you put her to bed at night.

Ive personally owned 7 of these fine cars.. all of them being awd... and all modded in some way.. it gets in the blood it seems. and as much as you try to move on to another car. dsms always work there way back into your life..just like the XGF you dumped 3 months ago but somehow you woke up with her again...

I would definitly make sure the car didnt have a rough life, get maintence records and check the timing belt and check the t-belt yea.. lol...do a compression test.. a good 1g will be 150 psi.. and 2g a lil more like 160.

the 2gs are bad for crank walk.. but in all if you want a 1g get a 92 or later..

O and on a side note.. I did 11.7 on a stock bottom end in a 96 awd talon. with a ACT 2600 never a issue.. I finnaly spit a rod out the side of the engine hehe but i did have the clutch wire disconected so i could start it with out pushing the clutch...

eZZZe 04-09-2008 04:37 PM

2g tsi awd.....very nice car
