08 ninja 250r first bike?

looking into the 2008 ninja 250R...is a motor sawp easy in these to go to at least 500cc?
has anyone riden one of these? im considering one as my first bike ONLY because of the stupid insurance rates. i was quoted 1500/year on this bike and anything that is 600+ is around 7 grand. also the purchase price o this bike is 4200 which is about the highest i want to spend right now.
i have my GM2 so if anyone knows a cheap bike insurance company let me no.

Prodigy 03-30-2008 02:57 PM

hmm...well i got myself a 600cc suzuki katana (u can also go for an sv650) and paid $2100 for insurance. when i got it i had GM2 licence as well and i was 19 at the time. im with tribute insurance located in burlington...but be careful with brokers...this guy tricked me, we agreed on every 3 month payments and ended up being 1 month...when i spoke to him about it, he acted like i misunderstood him which is definitely not the case seeing paying every month was too much money for me...anyways, I used to ride a friend's 500 ninja which got boring pretty fast, not much power to it (at least not for my liking)...600 is definitely the way to go...

i'll be selling my bike around May so let me know if you think you'd be interested..
here's a pic of a bike that looks exactly the same as mine. Not sure of the price yet, but we can work something out.

i was looking at the katanas too last season but never ended up getting one, im not in a rush to get a bike because im tryin to get a new car this week (2004ish caddy cts or a trailblazer) so funds will be low for a month cuz i have to pay cash, cant get financing...well i could probably but dont like to have debts.
keep me posted on that bike, looks good and depending on what you want for it and what the insurance will cost me. may sounds like when i will have enough money again to buy a bike. to be honest i kinda like the older katanas look a little better, they just look a little more sporty..but obviously newer is more reliable...most of the time lol

jimmy_on_20 03-30-2008 04:34 PM

oh and the sv650 doesnt have the full fairing...that is a big deal to me, im more about a bike that looks good than one with power, actually like that with everything...sounds stupid i know but thats how i am lol

Prodigy 03-30-2008 06:08 PM

yeah i know what you mean, that's actually the thing i don't like about the 650's myself...kinda looks "naked" if you know what i mean...

jimmy_on_20 03-30-2008 06:39 PM

ya...the other thing i was thinking was with the 250 is it possible to do a motor swap with a 5 or 600cc? well i no anything is possible but i mean is it worth it? it will keep the insurance down to keep it registered as a 250 which is my main concern. the 250 , based on the pics, looks almost like the 600. i think its a sweet looking bike...thats the 2008's not the 07's

Prodigy 04-03-2008 03:41 PM

yeah they made the 2008 look pretty good, but it's a small bike...as for the engine swap, I don't think it's worth it...you're better off paying the inusurance on the 500...think about it, you willl have to buy a new engine (500cc or 600cc), and plus pay for insurance...so really, you'll prolly end up paying more if you do a swap, and you'll have to go through all the trouble to find the right engine.
I remember, i was in a similar situation...I was thinking 250 at first, then I looked at the 500, but the 250 looked better and so I couldn't make my mind up. Then, I figured, since the insurance quote I got on the 600 katana was only like $200-$300 more than the 500 ninja, I figured it was worth it since to me, I saw the katana as having the 250's body and even more power than the 500. So overall, it was a win-win situation.

im 24 and i was quoted 1500 no collision 1700 with ...
good lick finding a 250r...apparently they are sold out in toronto area.. they are on backorder. i think ima wait till mid summer when someone gets a ticket and their insurance drops them so they have to sell the bike or something along those lines of a slightly used one.
but for now ive decided to just buy a caddy cts...just gotta find one that hasnt been smashed and fixed...

honestly dude with a 250 youl get bored of that thing in a month or two.

I'd suggest at least a gs500 or a SV650. Also the 08'SV now comes fully faired.
And if your strapped for cash the full fairing kit can be purchased for a few hundred new.

Also buying used and finding a decent deal you could learn howto ride on a smaller bike, sell it, then upgrade to a supersport 600-1400cc. used bikes hold there value insanely well.

Purchasing a bike based specifically on looks is mental. esp lowering it, adding LED's, no muffler and crome spinners.

Higher end sportbikes look dope. such as the new Ducati 898/1098, gsxr1000, R1 etc... :hypnotize and they perform as good as they look.

i totally agree with the you get what you pay for type of comment about higher end bikes...
when i said i care more about what the bike looks like i should have been more specific, i would rather be on a newer bike that looks good/deacent stock but is slow than be on a older bike that is fast but it duct taped together on the fairing and seat...i would never add any of those things to a bike that i have, its just for fun and to get around.
i really cant understand why used biked hold their value that well but ive noticed that too...actually they have gone up in value, you useto be able to get a deacent bike for 2 grand..now you end up with crap that has been down or has 80km or more on it...

Has anyone tried Riders Plus Insurance? They give online quotes and everything I've entered has come up 40% less than my auto and home insurance companies quote.

I know nothing really of motorcycles but with gas prices going up I might get one instead of a car. Is there upgrades to be made on this bike for better performance like better MPG and more HP. I'd imagine if it were to have an ECU it would be pretty simple to tune.

Icemanbates99 07-24-2008 04:03 AM

Maybe look into the 1990 - 1993 Honda CBR's They are pretty cheap, look amazing for their year, and perform great. They are also a sport tour and can reduce insurance a great deal because of that. I had one a few years back and they are a pretty reliable bike. Good luck wth your search

judgez24 10-04-2008 12:37 AM

my buddy had an 05 gs500 and it was a good bike to start on. not very fast but very easy to toss around and great for someone with minimal to no experience

Hyde 10-04-2008 05:28 PM

If the bike is before 1994 you have your full M and your over 21 there is no surcharge on a supersport bike for both the super and sport status of the bike. Standard or cruiser bikes will have the lowest insurance hands down. I was gonna get a bike but my parents were so against it they're probably gonna buy me a car until I'm out of the house and then I can get a bike.

turbojizer 11-18-2008 07:27 PM

goddd damnnn KATANA 600 IS 2500$ FOR INSURENCE
600 CBR OR GIXER IS 7500$ ..

wtf IS THIS REAL....
