2001 Katana gear grinding?

Hey,I recently bought a 2001 Suzuki Katana 600. It has 2900 miles on it and runs like a dream. Except for one thing, when I shift the bike from nutral to first it makes this grinding nosie. I have the cluch fully depresed at this time. Also this grinding does not happen with any other gear changes, such as 1st to 2nd... This leads me to beleve one of my worst fears, it is a problem in the transmission. Do you guyes agree? and if so where can I get this part cheap? Do I have to buy a brand new transmissison or can I get a 1st gear repair kit? I was thinking of turing to ebay to save a couple of bucks, whould you recomend that?

Check or replace the fluid with the recommended stuff first. Could be a maintenance issue or water contamination.
