I don't care what type of bike you buy. Harley or not, a smaller cc engine is safer for beginners. What matters most is safety. A new rider doesn't need and won't be able to handle the power of a 1200. I reccomend a smaller bike, maybe a honda 650 or 750, The Suzuki s-50 (I have that) or yes even a HD sportster low 833 cc. Let the smaller bike give you the lessons of ridership and ownership. Then when you feel the time is right, move up gradual to the 900's and 1100's out there. Kawasaki makes a great bike at 900 cc. If you're looking at Harley's, I'm glad you have the money to own one, but does the purchase make sense? Does the cost of repairs make sense or can you do them on your own? I suggest a used bike for the first one, you can find many for sale on line, in the paper and the auto trader magazines for your region. I'm not mechanical, but after a 65 an hour charge, I am going to be learning!!!
