How come used motorcycle prices are staying so high?

I have noticed that the price for a used motorcycle is extremely high. I have even seen many USED sport bikes selling ABOVE the MSRP. What is going on? Is it that they feel they should get their money back because they didn’t use it allot? Or is it that they only wanted it long enough to get the next newest bike and feel that they deserve their money back? This is getting out of control. I will add more details if needed.

Supply and demand, I suppose.. If you're looking for a bike, maybe you should go to several sources and try to talk them down. Maybe they are posting what they PRAY to get, but know they'll accept a lot less.. Offer book.. if they don't want it, walk away.

As fuel prices increase, people look for ways to save money. A sport bike can get better mileage than even an economy car, so demand for them goes up. Supply and demand keeps the price higher than it would if gas were cheaper. And people tend to think their bike is worth more than it is, so you have to look at how much they actually get, not how much they are asking.

mcied150 09-29-2007 10:05 PM

the demand is probably high.

jaxgsxr 09-29-2007 10:15 PM

Definitely supply and demand. Couple that with rises in gas prices and people are going to look for alternative travel means.

nascarmaniac 10-02-2007 06:41 PM

also special bikes like a GSXR and Hyabusas have better years than others so even know they are used they are way better than new bikes therefore people want them(supply) and that drives the price up(demand)

prices

One reason could be that motorcycle dealers are closing up shop so you kinda have no choice, but to buy private . I know of two big dealerships that have gone under in the last few years. Are you looking to buy a bike?

Mazdazoom 10-03-2007 09:45 PM

prices are high in summer and then drop just before snow hits . Its been like this every year.

also if you have noticed faster bikes sell for less compared to lower cc bikes because of insurance.

slow_teg 10-04-2007 04:37 PM

wait till winter comes and then the price will go down. that is what im waiting for. a bike that is 6000 right now will not be 6000 come december. just wait cause the person aint goin to sell it for that price....

A790 10-04-2007 09:33 PM

Because it's summer. Buy the bike in October.

beasty18c5 10-17-2007 06:18 PM

yeah just wait till fall or winter ppl think just cuz its summer they will get more cuz it's still the riding season. it's like buying a brand new car you wait till the end of year to get a good deal, dealers need more room for new ones

masalma 10-17-2007 10:12 PM

who said you save money on gas? :) trust me from experience some bike's gas mileage is worst than a lot of cars.

But the best source to get a bike now is on the auto-trader, most classified sections online prices are a little too high, even if it is the end of the season.

Another really good thing to do is to get one from the states, detriot and bufallo are not too far, and with the canadian dollar rising you will save a load of money, and it doesn't cost much to import. I will be doing that in the next month. upgrading to a 04 600RR and will save about 1500-2000 dollars instead of buying local.

Hope this helps

i find R6's to be reasonable...not the current redesigned generation, but the one before that

michael_bisping 12-15-2007 11:23 AM

first off, GSXR's are Garbage bikes thats why you can walk down the street and buy any 2006 -2007 GSXr 600 for cheaper then a used bike... The price is where the cc is at the higher the CC the more money it costs. Also Gas Mileage on a bike hmmmmm from toronto west to newmarket near Mt Albert ONTARIO it is close to a full tank of gas, why is because the higher speeds travelled... 200+ Kms/hr.

All bikes are expensive not like alot of these tuner civics going for $2,000-$3,000 Bucks.

even a 1999 GSXR600 is worth about $4,000 Mint.

2TONE_93GT 12-17-2007 05:17 PM

Can you import a bike from the US ?

That can always be an option to save a few dollars.

deckard 12-22-2007 11:04 PM

Pricing on bikes should level off or start to drop to keep in pace with the strength of the Canadian dollar
keep in mind that what you see is the asking price and that is not what the seller always gets
fewer dealers around means you get to see the true value of used bikes less and less
Bill 203 forced me off my 1000cc bike and has caused me to get a smaller bike 750cc or less

slow_teg 12-24-2007 10:51 PM

^^^ dude dropping from a 1000 to a 750 really isnt going to do much your still going to be doin well over 50 on any bike you have, even a 600 will do that without you even realizing it.... so why drop down

jcardinale 01-21-2008 10:02 AM

bikes

As wierd as it sounds motorcycles are like owning any type of sportscar, there a luxury not a nessceity that keeps the prices from depriciatting to much. Espcially in a cold climate where you can only ride a couple months of the year, this keeps the demand relativly low and the pricing high.
Later guys
PM me got a couple bikes for sale if anyones interested.

franco 01-31-2008 01:19 AM

all i know is i saw a 2007 gsxr 600 selling for 7500 and a 2003 they are still asking 6500.... i dont know but some how that does make alot of sense 1000 depretiation over 5 years... not likely...i think people are asking way to much for used bikes lately..... just my $0.02

Gsxr's are garbage? how so? i'd like to hear why you think that.

Depends on the bike for gas mileage really. My old gs500 got around 60MPG and that was not driven lightly. I paid 7K flat for it brand new and sold it 1.5 seasons later fro 5grand with 3500kms on it. not a bad deal.

But my cousins gsxr-1000 gets around 36MPG. but considering its a 10sec bike compared to a car that fast. thats pretty damn good!

As for the resale value of used bikes...GOTO THE US!!! honestly its retarded i know. people "think" that reselling bikes for the same as what they bought it for is reasonable and its funny b/c people ACTUALLY pay it!!! THATS the problem folks.

you can get a brand new R6, cbr600rr, ninja600 or gsxr750 for around 8grand new in the US. here your lucky to find an 07' for less than 9K.
