How to I jump the starter on my motorcycle?

I've been told by everyone that I need to connect two terminals on the starter solenoid to start my bike. The only problem is that I'm not sure what exactly I need to connect or where my starter solenoid is. I don't want to just start connecting random metal things in case I accidentally short something out. Could anyone show me a picture of what I need to connect or tell me where the plugs are that I need to connect? The bike is a 1982 Yamaha xj550. Thanks for any help.

If your bike has a kick starter, use it. Most cycles have starter systems that do not depend on the battery, you also might try a rolling start, in either case, make sure you TURN THE IGNITION to the ON position... . Jump starting is not something that I would suggest if there is any other option, including taking the battery out and getting it charged somewhere else. Why risk frying your entire electrical system? The battery only spins the starter, you can get the engine to turn over and go with a dead battery 99.9% of the time.
