You could be forgiven for thinking that the Ducati Diavel was the company’s first cruiser but it wasn’t. The first was a scooter that was way ahead of its time but ultimately unsuccessful. the Ducati Cruiser was produced between 1952 and ’54. This one is in New Zealand and is one of perhaps just 12 remaining in the world.

In 1950 with scooters selling like hotcakes in Italy, it must have seemed pretty logical for Ducati, who was seeing the sales of its Cucciolo beginning to wane, to have been attracted to the scooter segment. Not content with a 2-stroke Vespa clone, Ducati built the world’s first 4-stroke scooter featuring a purpose built 175cc overhead valve single and in another first, an automatic transmission.

A downdraft Dell’Orto carburetor helped produce 12 horsepower but it was de-tuned to 7.5 for production to meet a government mandated 50mph speed limit. The 3 speed automatic gearbox featured a hydraulic torque converter and was extremely complicated resulting in numerous warranty issues. The model also featured electric start care of a 12 volt electrical system that was extremely rare at the time.

It seems quite very interesting that the Ducati cruiser seems like an classic scooter, and but the speedy feature in it is been quite very efficient in it, as far as my concern.
