A moped was a motorcycle under 50cc with pedals [motor/pedal], these were mainly of the "step through" type and not particularly popular really until the 1970s when Yamaha introduced the FS1E which looked like a real motorcycle, In the early 70s [72 or 73] the law changed in this country making the age to ride motorcycles 17 years as opposed to 16 [250cc]. But the age for a moped remained at 16.This was when the moped took off and the FS1E became very popular as did many sports type mopeds, there was no restriction on max speed at that time.During the late 70s early 80s the mopeds lost their pedals and came to look like "real" motorcycles and what we have today.Since then little has changed except that modern mopeds are restricted in power and max speed [28mph].
